Dinner Smash Success

For November Brunch, Dinner
On Tuesday night, October 11,
Shearith Israel Congregation
sponsored a dinner in behalf of
the Israel Bond Campaign, which
by all standards was an out
standing success.
Close to 200 persons attended
the dinner, at which Mr. Robert
St. John, noted author and cor
respondent, was the principal
speaker. One of the highlights of
the dinner was the dedication of
a memorial plaque honoring the
memory of six million martyrs of
the Hitler era, and presented to
the Congregation by the Vemer
famijy in memory of Frank
Verner.
Mr. H. A. (Sonny) Greenberg,
Chairman, and Mrs. Irving Li-
bowsky, Co-Chairman, both
stated that “We were more than
pleased at the results of this din
ner, not only in terms of the
enthusiasm and interest shown
by those attending, but by the
practical results it achieved for
the State of Israel and her peo
ple. We are convinced that this
proves the need for all Congrega
tions to participate in the Bond
campaign to encourage broader
coverage of our community for
sale of Israel Bonds. We are
proud that we were the pioneers
in this effort, and we hope that
all the other Congregations in
our city will follow the example
we have set.”
The Israel Bond Campaign this
year has set a goal for the sale
of a minimum of $500,000 in
bonds. The campaign will be
climaxed by a dinner at the Pro-

Welfare Fund
A permanent entity known as
the Women's Service Group of
the Women’s Division of the At
lanta Jewish Welfare Fund, Inc.,
was voted into being by the
Women’s Division after a year of
study, it was announced this
week by Mrs. Harold Marcus,
Chairman of the Steering Com
mittee on reorganization of the
Women’s Division.
Under Mrs. Marcus’ chair
manship. a committee consisting
of Mrs. Sam A Herman, Mrs. Jos.
Cuba, Mrs Herman Heyman,
Mrs. Barney Medintz, Mrs. Philip
Shulhafer and Mrs. I. F. Sterne,
held a series of meetings cover
ing a period of a year, to con
sider a proposed plan for the
reorganization of the Womens
Division After completing its
work, this committee submitted
the plan to the leadership of the
Women’s Division at a plenary
gressive Club on Sunday night,
November 27th, at which the
Ambassador to the United States
from Israel, His Excellency Av-
raham Harman, will be honored.

Dr. Shapiro Accepts
Atlanta Engagement
As this issue went to press
word was received that Dr.
Judah Shapiro, top official of
the newly created National
Foundation for Jewish Cul
ture, has accepted a speaking
engagement in Atlanta for
November 20.
He will address the annual
meeting of the Atlanta Jew
ish Welfare Fund. Details will
be announced in a later issue.
Dr. Shapiro is the former
national director of Hillel.

The ratification of the plan has
resulted in the creation of a year-
round service group which will
give continuity to the work of
the Women’s Division of the At
lanta Jewish Welfare Fund.
Membership in the new year-
round service group is open to
every Jewish woman who con
tributes $5.00 or more to the cur
rent Welfare Fund Campaign.
There are no dues.
As set out in the proposed plan
which was adopted, the purpose
of the service group is to enlist
and to coordinate the efforts of
the Women’s Division into a con
tinuing service group, and to
serve as a representative of the
Women’s Division in Welfare

at the Shearith Israel Social
Hall.
Mrs. Mossman, who has been
featured in these reviews for
the past three years, will re
view two books: '‘The Marri
age Broker” by Israel J. Zevin
and “Grandpa and the Girls”
by Louis M. Heyward.”
According to Mrs. Stanley
Harris, chairman of the Book
Review Committee, "Both
books are excellent examples
of Jewish humor and reflect
hilarious life situations.”
Admission is $2.00 for the
series of three or $1.00 for a

Ira Hirschmann former US.
Envoy in Turkey, will be the
principal speaker November 13
and 14 at the annual Donnor
Dinner and Brunch of the At
lanta Chapter of Hadassah.
Mr Hirschmann has just re
turned from a secret mission to
the Middle East under the aus
pices of the U S. State Depart-
•ment and the United Nations. He
visited all the countries sur
rounding Israel — Syria, Jordan,
Lebanon, the Gaza Strip, and in
his capacity had opportunity to
learn the inside story of the pro
gram of the enemy versus Israel.
He spend an evening in Amman,
Jordan with King Hussein and
Hazza El Majali, Foreign Minis
ter, who has since been assasi-
nated.
His on-the-scene story brings
to us for the first time an eye
witness disclosure of the opera
tion of the Arab States, econom
ically and politically, and their
program in relation to Israel.
While serving as President
Roosevelt’s Special Representa
tive in Turkey, Mr. Hirschmann
was responsible for bringing
some 15,000 children out of the
Balkans into Palestine. In his
book “Lifeline of a Promised
Land,” he records how he owes
his discovery of the future Israel
to Henrietta Szold who inspired
him to carry on his mission by
opening the doors to Israel to
the refugees he had rescued.
Some of the boats in the book,
“Exodus” were the ones Mr.
Hirschmann had chartered in
Cyprus and in Turkey.
In 1946 Mr. Hirschmann was
Special Inspector General of the
United Nations and Rehabilita
tion Administration where he
organized the DP camps in Ger
many.
A pioneer in radio and televi
sion, Mr. Hirschmann founded
Brandeis Committee
Honor New Members
New members of the Brandeis
University National Women’s
Committee will be honored on
October 29 by the annual Bus
Tour of Homes.
Mrs. Dan Garson, Mrs. Mar
shall Mantler and Mrs. Sylvan
Makover will display their
homes to the new affiliates of
the organization. A chartered
bus will be arranged for the trip
and Mrs. Garson will serve tea
to the honorees.
Members of the committee
who have been responsible for
signing two new members this
year will also be invited.
IRA HIRSCHMANN
radio station WOR in Newark,
N. J., and station WABF in New
York. A former vice-president of
Bloomingdale’s and Saks Fifth
Avenue, he is now chairman of
the executive committee of the
Colonial Trust Company of New
York.
Mr. Hirschmann has been a
member of the Board of Higher
Education of New York, chair
man of the Board of Trustees of
the New School for Social Re
search and chairman of the
March of Dimes Campaign.
Mr. Hirschmann has made
twelve intensive survey trips to
Israel in recent years, waa presi
dent of the Foundation for the
Future of Israel. He lpw person
ally negotiated with Prime Mi
nister Ben-Gurion of Israel, Colo
nel Nasaer of Egypt and other
high ranking officials for the
U. S. State Department.

Women’s Division Welfare Fund

The new organization will b«
governed by a Board and Ad
ministrative Committee and will
have five standing committees:
(1) Committee on Campaign
Leadership; 42) Committee on
Year-Round Interpretation; (3)
Collection Committee; (4) Per
sonal Service Committee; (5)
Nominating Committee.
At the meeting at which the
reorganization plan was ap
proved, Mrs. Marcus was named
as temporary chairman. Named
to serve with her a* temporary
officer* are Mrs. Herman Hey
man as vice chairman and Mrs.
Sam Altennan, secretary.
