Moscow to Permit
Publication of
Yiddish Magazine
LONDON (JTA)—A new Yid
dish magazine will soon be pub
lished in the Soviet Union, it
was reported here from Moscow
The publication, to be known as
“Soviet Homeland,” will feature
both art and articles. Aaron
Wergelis, a Yiddish writer, will
be editor of the magazine, which
is expected to reach a circulation
of 25,000, according to the report.
The new periodical will be the
first Yiddish paper to be pub
lished in the Soviet Union since
the late 1940’s, when the Stalin
regime banned Yiddish papers
and the Yiddish theater was
closed.
It was also reported here from
Moscow that Ilya Ehrenburg,
Soviet Jewish writer, for the first
time indicated publicly that Osip
Mandelstam, the Russian Jewish
poet who disappeared during the
Soviet purges in the 1930’s, was
actually banished to Siberia,
where he died in a concentration
camp for political prisoners.
Eshkol Defends
Transfer of Shares
To U.S. Investors
JERUSALEM, (JTA)—Finance
Minister Levi Eshkol stoutly de
fended in Israel’s Parliament
this week the transfer by the
Israel Government to the Ameri
can Investors Corporation of its
shares in the Haifa Fertilizers
and Qiemicals Company.
He said it was a basic govern
ment policy to encourage private
investors to take over such enter
prises in which the Government
had participated until the pro
ject reached the stage where
public support was no longer re
quired.
Mr. Eshkol praised the corpo
ration and its directors and said
they had long been prominent
for their selfless devotion to Is
rael. He added he hoped the
transaction would be the first of
a series bringing in many more
millions from overseas investors.
He reported that the American
corporation had 27 different in
vestments in Israel.
