EMPHASIS ON WOMEN
It works out, partly through design and partly through
coincidence, that this issue of The Southern Israelite is filled
with material about the role of Jewish women in our con
temporary life.
Traditionally, we present our annual special section de
voted to Hadassah in preparation for the forthcoming regional
convention in Columbus, Ga. The material is greatly personal
ized and directs attention particularly on the top leadership
of Hadassah Chapters in the region’s communities. We take
this opportunity for words of tribute to the dedication and
tireless effort which Hadassah women devote to the humani
tarian aims of their organization. It is always an inspiration
to see so many working in consonance towards objectives.
Truly their organization at work is a beauty to behold — in
more ways than sheer group mechanics.
This issue carries as well details of several other groups
of Jewish women, the Regional Sisterhoods of Southern Con
servative Congregations, the Council of Jewish Women, B’nai
B’rith Women and at least one other organziation of women
working for Israel. Theirs too are dedicated programs and
we are happy that the occasion arises to direct tribute to the
several roles our Jewish women take in our manifold com
munal life. Few confine their energies to one specific group
but share interests and energies capably with the fullness of
their duties as mates and mothers, some even in addition to
careers in the business world.
We often wonder how they manage to get so much done
and are always humbly grateful that they do. Our Jewishness
is greatly enriched by their achievements.

Commission Calls For
Claims Against Poland
WASHINGTON (JTA) —
United States citizens, Jewish
and non-Jewish, having claims
against Poland for the nationali
zation or other taking of their
property were urged today by
the U. S. Foreign Claims Settle
ment Commission to file claims
immediately with the commis
sion.
Mrs. Stanley D. Pace, chairman
of the commission, announced
that a recently negotiated Ameri-
can-Polish agreement to pay $40,-
000,000 over a 20-year period re
quired that claimants file claims
before September 30 Commis
sion sources pointed out that
many American nationals of Jew
ish faith were among the 19,500
persons notified of the agreement
because they lost property in Po
land. Eligible claimants must
show to the commission that the
property upon which the claims
are based was owned by United
States citizens at the time of the
taking. In addition, the loss must
have occurred prior to July 16,
1960, the date the claims agree
ment with Poland was signed.
