This is the first in a series of six reports on the Jewish
Situation in Germany today. The articles are of extreme im
portance at this time, when the world, the Jewish world in
particular, is keeping an eye on the impact of the Eichmann
trial on the German people.
Or. Nahum Goldmann has spoken again and the pronouncement

BERLIN, West Germany—
There were 600,000 Jews in
Germany when Adolf Hitler
assumed power in 1938. Today
there are 22,000 registered mem
bers of the 95 scattered Jewish
communities in Germany.
Dr. Hendrik George van Dam,
general secretary of the Zentral-
rat der Juden in Deutschland,
claims there are at least six to
eight thousand more Jews who
are not registered, and there are
some Jewish leaders who believe
there are many more who either
have intermarried or who wish
to leave the Jewish community.
Regardless of the variations in
estimating the strength of the
surviving Jewish communities,
there is a pessimistic view re
garding Germany Jewry’s future
status. While eight years ago the
average age of the Jews in Ger
many was 57, it is now 48. In
other words, the community,
which was composed in the main
of old people, now has more of
the middle-aged.
But there still are very few
young Jews, and among them
are many who aspire to study in
England or in Israel and to emi
grate either to Israel or to some
western country, preferably the
United States
Tbe outlook, therefore, is self-
evident. There is only a bleak
future for Jewry, and while the
government has an official policy
that virtually pleads that Jews
should retaain in Germany and
that niore former nationals should
return “home,” the chances for
such a “return” are slim indeed.
The largest Jewish community
is in Berlin. The chairman of
the JUfflkche Gemeinde, Heinz
Gallnskd, who has beaded the
Gemeinde (community) since
I9W, kha Who, like hearly all the
Je#lfi^ lenders in Germany, is a

A tegular monthly record is
kefet to indicate the Jewish popu
lation figures according to ages.
For the month of March, the rec
ord shows three births and 13
deaths. In Appl .there were no
births and 12 dfeaUls.
These figures tally with records
in other German Jewish com
munities. The birth rate is low
arid the death rate is high. It
may Well be said, therefore, that
German Jewry is a dying com
munity.
Government officials R»k with

Before the advent of Hitlerism,
r*&
torn that
German Jewry was the most cul
tured Jewish community in the
world. It produced Jndbches
Wissenchaft, great cultural move
ments, which it shared with
world Jewry. Today it is spirit
ually impoverished, because its
leaders either were murdered or
they had emigrated; and German
leaders state frankly that Ger
many herself has been impover
ished in the same proportional
degree as the Jewish dommilhity
as a result of the Nazi holocaust
and the loss of Jewish and other
cultural giants who had left the
land.
From Chancellor Konrad Ade
nauer all the way down the line,
members of the Bonn Govern
ment, regardless of rank, strive to
befriend Jews, to create the best
contacts with Israel, to assist in
the development of Jewish cul
tural institutions. But in a very
short time—unless Germany Jew
ry is vastly increased by an in
flux of escapees from behind the
Iron Curtain—there may be so
few Jews left that the Hitler-
Eichmann-Heydrich aspirations
to perfect their scheme for “a
final solution to the Jewish prob
lem” may prove to be Nazism’s
real success.
OFF THE RECORD—By Nathan Ziprin
Professor Proves A Point
And the point he proves is that
education is no antidote to non
sense. We have in mind Profes
sor Toynbee, the great historian
who at one time seemed so im
pressed by the absolute verity
of a piece of pure fiction of his
own making—the fossilization of
Judaism—that he was even pre
pared to risk his reputation as
a historian. To his credit, it must
be said that he retracted his
error, but after his most recent
exposure before the American
Council for Judaism no one
would be surprised to see him
revert to his old theme song.
Nothing would please the Juda-
ists more than that sort of in
tellectual somersault
Whence does Toynbee derive
his authority to give counsel to
Jews? The Judaists need no
bechsher, because they thrive on
to give any publicity to the
Judaists. At best they are lost
souls in a Jewish world. But
where do Jews even of their
vintage derive the impudence,
the gall, the callousness to de
secrate the name of the six mil
lion who perished under Hitler
by proclaiming to a world that
is first learning the truth of our
tragedy that Israel and the Zion
ists are exploiting the Eichmann
trial to promote the concept of
Jewish people hood? If there are
Nazis who read their piece, they
found comfort and aid and en-
couragemeni Only pecfele
estranged from the apringwell of
Jewish life could have given
birth to such rishus, evil, wicked
ness.
The American Jewish commun
ity is not deceived by the antics
, ... ^ of the Councilities. At best they
other pastures. And those who represent an infinitesimal seg
have respect for hechshenm will me nt of the Jewish commun
confused scholar equated Zionism
with anti-Semitism. He has done
that before and be will do it
again—bn the platform of the
Judaists. In fact, if memory
serves us right, he once dbew a
parallel between what (he Nazis
did to fire Jews and Israel to the
At-ahs. Had that malodorous
thesis come from the mouth of
the ignorant there Trotild have
been no heed to pause even in
contempt. Ignorance can be for
given. But when a man Who
claims to know and understand
the currants of history way back
to their Very rodts makes such
comparisons he is guilty of one
of two things—ignorance Or de-
librate distortion of facts and
their climate.
The professor of course has the
absolute right to pontificate as
he pleases as long as he operates
within the realm or framework
of his concept of history. But
when he has the impudence to
counsel what amounts to Jewish
suicide—as he did at the Judaist
parley last week When he con
tended that Zionism and anti-
Semitism were the major im
pediments to the great utopia of
the absolute amalgamation of re
ligious civilisations—he deserves
to have his knuckles rapped.
We have no particular desire
even under microscope,
that the Judaists have exposed
themselves their misled follow
ers behold their shameless naked
ness.
LETTER FROM
A LADY ...
Some columns ago we noted
that President Wilson considered
the number 13 so lucky that be
dropped a middle name so as to
have thirteen letters in his nante
—Woodrow Wilson. We relied On
memory for that nugget. Sopne
readers wrote in questioning, our
accuracy, particularly since yd-
son was considered the laaqmg
egg-head of his day. However a
letter from a lady in Los Angeles,
Mrs. Olga Judith Rosehtbal, in
forms us we were right though
the lady is a bit disturbed that
one of her favorite columnists
should be a ttumarologist. Mrs
Rosenthal, whose husband is a
practicing attorney, advises us
that her husband knew President
Wilson in Washington when he

the number 13. When he could,
the lady says, President Wilibn
would choose hotel rooms on the
thirteenth floor.
