Whil# it may or may not be
true that nobody but nobody
undersells Gimbel’s, it is well
nigh impossible not to undersell
Mrs. Louis B. (Elinor) Gimbel
Jr. For in trying to capture,
however fleetingly, this many-
faceted personality on paper, it
is difficult to know on which of
her widespread social, busines,
political, welfare and education
al activities to begin. For ex
ample, when I went to talk to
her the other day about what
role she thought Israel might
play in relationship to the new
emerging nations in Africa,
there was a gentleman waiting
to get her approval of the new
Miss Rheingold applicants, a
task which presumably falls on
her as a director of Liebman
Breweries, Inc. This is less para
doxical than it seems, however,
for it is Mrs. Gimbel’s firm con
viction that in order to be ef
fective in your duties as a citi
zen, you must firsl be effective
in business, and ever the twain
shall meet. She herself is the
best proof of her theory.
In addition to her association
with Liebman Breweries, this
ubiquitous lady is a member of
the famed Gimbel Department
Stores family, a vice president
and director of S.S. Steiner, Inc.,
and a vice president and direc
tor of Electronize Chemicals,
Inc. She is founder and president
of the Women’s Division of the

The quantity might give the
impression that her name is
used as “window dressing.” This
couldn’t be further from the
truth for Mrs. Gimble tackles
her responsibilities with a seri
ousness and sincerity — and a
gusto—that cannot but inspire
those around her. “I work hard
and I play hard—a recipe my
father taught me for living.”
One of the ways in which she
succeeds to get along on about
five hours sleep and working
through the night” when the
phone stops ringing—about two
a.m.”
Mrs. Gimble is visiting Israel
for the first time this year and
will be on hand at the opening
of the Jewish National and Uni
versity Library on the new cam
pus of the Hebrew University at
Givat Ram, Jerusalem. Since
1948, when the old Univesrity
was cut off on Mt. Scopus and
designated No Man’s Land, the
American Friends of the He
brew University, sparked by
Mrs. Gimbel has been raising
funds in order to build a new,
central library for the school.
The library will be the largest
and most comprehensive in the
Middle East and one of the
special halls of the library will
be named for Marian Anderson,
selected as 1960’s “Woman of
the Year” by this organization.
This would all seem to fit in
to Mrs. Gimble’s belief that Is
rael can be a beacon for the new
African nations in their struggle
for economic and academic de
velopment. “While we have an
economy of waste” she said
“most nations have an economy
of struggle.” It is in the field of
ideas that Israel can best serve.
Israel already has aid programs
to Ghana, Sudan and other new
nations and is becoming increas
ingly aware of its opportunities
to help these new neighbors.
On the home front, Mrs. Gim
bel has long been an advocate
of greater academic freedom and
giving our teachers and educa
tors their appropriate reward,
not only financially, but in our
social attitudes. She decries our
drift toward a philosophy of
comfort and security while ne
glecting our great "human re
source” with its conglomerate
heritage from so many cutlures.
In her worldwide travels, Mrs.
Gimbel has found that America
is sill a name with which to con
jure to most of the peoples of
the world. “They look to us,”
she asserts with real conviction
"to produce the right kind of
leaven that will bring forth
ideals, accomplishments, free
doms and the better life for
mankind that our revolutionary
fathers envisaged.”
Dear Mrs. Gimble, Amen.
