TR. 6-7361 Atlanta, Ga. _ Greetings • ? and Best Wishes A FRIEND A QUIZ FOR THE FAMILY By IRENE MYER Q.: What was the most re markable technological aspect of Israel’s first rocket launch in July? A.: The fact that the Israel- designed and Israel-made rocket, S h a v i t II, was multi-staged. Building and firing such a rocket so that each stage ignites in proper sequence represents rock et technology of a very high order. Q.: What Jewish history did President Kennedy make in his major appointments? A.: He named two Jewish Cabinet members—Abraham A Ribicoff, Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare, and Ar thur Goldberg, Secretary of La bor. This is the first time in American history that a Cabinet has had two Jewish members. Q.: What was the key claim that Adolf Eichmann used in his defense in Israel against charges that he m a s t e r-minded the slaughter of 6,000,00 European Jews? A.: That he' was a minor cog in the vast murder machinery who only carried out orders and never issued them as head of the Gestapo Department for Jewish Affairs. .: What argument did President Kennedy touch off in the Jewish community with his bill for fed eral aid to pnblic schools? A.: A dispute between pro ponents of Jewish day schools, most of them orthodox, and other elements of the Jewish community, about the advisabili ty of federal aid to such Jewish schools. A large number of Jew ish organizations, while sticking to their opposition to any fed eral aid to any private schools, came out during the year with appeals to Jewish federations to end a long-standing policy of refusing grants to such Jewish schools. Q.: How did America’s first and only avowed Nazi party do during the year? A.: Poorly. An Arliitlton judge slapped sentences of a year at hard labor on two of George Rockwell’s “stormtroopers” for dragging a Jewish boy into the Nazi “headquarters” in that Virginia city and abusing him. The incident sparked formation of a Citizens Emergency Com mittee of mostly non-Jews to find means of getting rid of Rockwell and his entourage. Q. Was any progress reported in the problem of exclusion quotas in American colleges and universities against prospective Jewish students? A.: Prof. William Haber, na tional chairman of the Hillel Foundation reported that the Jewish quota system in the col leges and universities was “vir tually dead.” He cited data from medical schools—long one of the worst practitioners of such biased admission policies — to support his statement. Q.: How much money did American Jews contribute dur ing the year to aid fellow Jews in need, at home and abroad? A :A total of $128,000,000 ac cording to the Council of Jewish Federations and Welfare Funds. Q.: What long-standing pole mic did Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion revive during the year? A.: That only people planning to settle in Israel had the right to call themselvps Zionists, with particular reference to Ameri can Jews. Q.: In that connection, the Prime Minister said he knew of only one Jew in America who was really a Zionist, a man who regarded his Jewishness and his Americanism as two separate things. What was the name of that American Jew? A.: If you know, you are the best informed Jew in the United States. nTOiwwniiiiumiimuin Greetings of the Season • • EVANS FINE FOOD RESTAURANTS 790 Ponce de Leon Ave., N E — TR 2-8222 ' 798^ Peachtree St., N E TR 4-0312 \ 2137 N.
