THE PROPHET NATHAN DENOUNCES KING DAVID
“Thou Art The Man”
By RUTH MORRIS
(Standard Feature Syndicate)
After the death of King
Saul and Jonathan in the
disastrous battle of Mount
Gilboa, David became King
of Israel. He captured Jeru
salem and made it the capital
of his kingdom. He built him
self a magnificent palace
there and brought the Ark of
the Covenant into his royal
city. He planned to build a
temple for the Ark but the
Prophet Nathan forbade this,
reminding him that the God
of Israel had always dwelt
in a humble tent.
Nathan is well known for
his courage, his fearless de
nunciation of King David
for having had Uriah killed
so that he might marry love
ly Bathsheba, Uriah’s young
wife. The story is found in
II Samuel 12:1-15.
“And the Lord sent Nathan
unto David. And he came un
to him and said: Once upon
a time, there lived two men
in one city, the one rich, the
other poor. The rich man had
many flocks, but the poor
man had nothing save one
little ewe-lamb, which he
tenderly brought up and
nourished. It grew up togeth
er with him and his children
and it ate of his own meat
and drank of his own cup,
and lay in his bosom and was
unto him as a daughter. And
there came a traveller unto
the rich man, and he spared
to take of his own flock and
of his own herd, to dress for
the wayfaring man that was
come, but took t h e poor
man’s lamb, and dressed it
for his guest.”
David’s anger was greatly
kindled against the man and
he said to Nathan: “As the
Lord liveth, the man that
hath done such thing shall
surely die and he shall re
store the lamb fourfold, be
cause he did this and because
he had no pity.”
And Nathan sternly said to
David: “THOU ART THE
MAN! Thus saith the Lord
God of Israel, I anointed thee
King over Israel, and I de
livered thee out of the hand
of Saul and I gave thee thy
master’s house and thy mas
ter’s wives; I gave thee the
house of Israel and the house
of Judah. And if that had
been too little, I would add
unto thee so much more.
Wherefore hast thou des
pised the word of the Lord,
to do what is evil in My
sight? Uriah, the Hittite, thou
hast smitten with the sword,
and his wife thou hast taken
to be thy wife, and him thou
hast slain with the sword of
Ammon. Now, therefore, the
sword shall never depart
from thy house; because
thou hast despised Me, and
hast taken the wife of Uriah,
the Hittite, to be thy wife.
Thus saith the Lord: Behold,
I will raise up evil against

thee out of thine own house,
and I will take thy wives
before thine eyes and give
them unto thy neighbor. For
thou didst it secretly, but I
will do this thing before all
Israel and before the sun.”
And David said unto Na
than: ‘I have sinned against
the Lord.’ And Nathan re
plied: ‘The Lord also hath
put away thy sin; thou shalt
not die. Howbeit, because by
this deed thou hast greatly
blasphemed the enemies of
the Lord; the child also that
is born unto thee, shall sure
ly die.’
And Nathan departed unto
his house.
And the Lord struck the
child that Uriah’s wife bore
unto David and it was very
sick . . and it came to pass on
the seventh day that the
child died. And David com
forted Bathsheba . . and she
bore a son, and called his
name Solomon. And the Lord
loved him. And after the
death of David, the Kingdom
was established in the hand
of Solomon.
