Southern Israelite Reports Annual
Burglary; Losses Petty Cash, Stamps
The Southern Israelite reported
its annual burglary took place
during the Labor Day weekend.
As usual. Editor and Publisher
Adolph Rosenberg told the police,
the intruder made off with the
petty cash, this year amounting
to $6 in currency and about $3
in small change.
Also missing was the stamp
box, with around $4 of air mail,
special delivery and small de-
nominajlion pastables and an in
determinate amount of salvaged
stamps as yet unseparated from
envelope segments. The bulk of
the 4-cent rolls had been depleted
in mailing out end-of-month
statements.
The burglar broke a pane of
plate glass near the Currier street
door, reached in and opened the
lock. Around $8 damage re
sulted
Bookkeeper Ruth Kahn ob
served that the 1961 burglar was
more considerate than the others
who almost annually have drop
ped in for petty-cash hauls. He
ransacked the desk drawers in
search of cash without dumping
the contents onto the floor.
Atlanta detectives discovered
police had under arrest a drunk
with a cut wrist. He had a tran
sistor radio and two cigarette
lighters and $16 in cash on his
person at the time, but there was
no evidence any of these items
had been taken at The Southern
Israelite offices.
