Slotin Explains Liberal Platform
Smith-
by PHILLIP SLOTIN
My parents were born in the Jewish‘faith in Poland. They emi
grated to this country in order to seek first class citizenship in a
Democracy and to escape religious persecution. A native of Georgia
I attended University of Georgia where I received my Bachelors
Degree in Business Administration (BBA); Emory University, where
1 received a Bachelors Decree of Law (LLB), and I attended Georgia
State College for approximately one academic year in graduate work
in accounting. I took the Bar examination as a junior at Emory and
was successfully admitted to the practice of law in 1952. at which
time I became associated with Mr. Daniel Duke (who had achieved
national acclaim for his prosecution of the KIu KIux Kian.I I am
presently a member ol the firm of Wimberly, Ivey and Slotin. In
the past nine years of law practice. I have participated on some of
the most important cases in the community involving racial injustice.
M. L. SMITH CASE
Last year, with the help of the
Atlanta Daily World, the Negro
community represented by a Citi
zens’ Committee, I was one of the
lawyers instrumental in helping
acquit an innocent Negro boy,
M. L. Smith, who was charged
with the crime of raping two
white girls. This acquittal was
the result of three trials and an
appeal to the Supreme Court and
covered a period of time of 14
months. One of the most signifi
cant factors in the case was that
it demonstrated to the “evil”
forces of this county that they
cannot now pick up any inno
cent Negro bov and “railroad”
him to the electric chair under
the guise of racial justice. The
Negro community now no longer
lives under the fear of “it might
be mine tomorrow.” Let me quote
from an editorial following the
case, in the Atlanta Daily World.
“In the first place, his counsel
are to be commended for the
firm stand and the devotion ex
hibited throughout the trials.
Two hard-worked attorneys—
Dan Copeland and Phillip Slotin.
now have every reason to be
proud of the fight they put up . .
All in all. the enactment and its
ramifications give a new mean
ing to loyalty and a new em
phasis on unstinted devotion and
racial fealty.”
KLAN INFILTRATION
OF DEPUTY SHERIFFS
Last year, in speeches on be
half of one of the sheriff’s can
didates. Archie Lindsey, (pre
sently Fulton County Commis
sioner). I attempted to expose
the fact that the Klan was at
tempting to infiltrate the political
deputy sheriffs ranks and warn
ed the community of its potential
dangers. Shortly thereafter at
the University of Georgia riot
ing Klansmen were exposed as
Fulton County deputy sheriffs,
indicating that my warnings
were substantiated.
This situation—Klansmen wear
ing deputy sheriffs badges and
legally clothed with all the au
thority of a peace officer-—is a
potentially dangerous situation,
and it is a particular threat to
the peace and security of the
Jewish community. I cite this
not only to indicate my past ac
tion in this area but also as a
warning to the responsible Jew
ish leadership y and particularly
1o the ADL that something
should be done.
SCHOOL BOMBING
About the first of the year af
ter the legislature voted on open
schools, many racial organiza
tions were organizing, gathering
strength and trying to stir up
trouble. One of these organiza
tions was the Klu Klux Klan,
which met at a rally at down-
down hotel. At this rally, an At
lanta attorney made a statement
that “We must burn the schools
to maintain segregation.” One
week later, the English Avenue
School was bombed.
Mayor Hartsfield issued a state
ment that unless the good peo
ple of Atlanta speak up, every
one may think that Atlanta is
run bv the bigot, rabbles, and
racists. At that time I not only
spoke up bv writing a letter to
the Editor of the Atlanta Journ
al. I also contacted the law
enforcement agencies of Atlanta,
tempting to have the attorney
prosecuted and charged with the
crime of inciting. 1 further at
tempted to start disbarment pro
ceedings against that lawyer.
Although this attorney was never
disbarred and was never prose
cuted. he has not since that time
made any public inflammatory
statements nor has any other
leader of any similar organiza
tion made any inciting state
ments. In mv opinion, this event
was the turning point in the
public attitude and atmosphere
toward school desegregation. I
am proud of mv participation in
this event.
SCHOOL INTEGRATION
At the time I made mv an
nouncement in April that I would
run. I stated that the people have
a right to know what a candidate
stands for. I stated, unafraid, and
at a time when no one was say
ing anything, and at a time when
leadership was so desperately
needed, that: “It is the solemn
duty of every candidate, of every
public officials, of every religious
and civic leader, of each and
every citizen of Atlanta to see
to it that there are no ugly inci
dents during the forthcoming
school desegregation.” I feel that,
along with Mayor Hartsfield and
Dr. Letson. I was one of the min
ute men in setting the pace and
the proper atmosphere and pub
lic attitude for peaceful desegre
gation. Since that time, of course,
some public officials and organ
izations such as the Atlanta Bar
Association and OASIS have fol
lowed suit, but where were my
“Johnny-oome-lately—do-nothing
opponents”?
OBJECTIVE AND
FACTUAL HONESTY
Several months ago at the be
ginning of this campaign I
charged in a press release that
all the emphasis was being
placed on the mayor’s race and
the aldermanic candidates were
being ignored. I further Charged
that unless the press and civic
clubs sponsoring the rallies made
changes in this trend that the
public would have no opportuni
ty to meet and know the alder-
manic candidates and that this
aldermanic election would be
come a “farce” whereby voters
would be voting for a name rath
er than bv an intelligent decision
based upon information about
the candidates and their plat
forms. I contended that the mere
fact that the aldermanic candi
dates put hundreds of signs all
over the city displaying his name
does not objectively inform the
voter.
At the start of this press con
ference I was placed in a lie de
tector machine and the mem
bers of the participating press
asked questions covering every
phase of mv basic honesty, both
personal, professional and poli
tical and they asked me ques
tions on mv political views and
platforms. The results of this
test appeared publicly in the
newspapers, local television, on
radio stations, and the wire serv
ices over the entire country.
The results of this test, among
other things, indicated that I am
a man of scruplous honesty and
integrity: that I was not a
“bought” or “kept” candidate;
and that if elected my sole re
sponsibility would be to repre
sent the best interests of Hhe
people of Atlanta. I received con
gratulations from people and
the news media all over the
country with such glowing tri
butes as—“Diogenes can put out
his candle, the mythical honest
man has been found.” I believe
that people of Atlanta would
rather have proven and objective
honesty and sincerity than they
would political promises and
hundreds?of “say nothing” adver
tising si£n.s.
COUNTY UNIT
SYSTEM FIGHT:
As part of mv original cam
paign announcement I stated that
one of the most obvious prob
lems confronting the city of At
lanta is its relationship with the
state which, including the unfair
County Unit System, lack of fair
representation in the legislature,
lack of home rule, and lack of
slate tax equalization. Since that
time I have commenced a one-
man fight against these problems
including an appearance before
the Twittv Legislative Commi-
tee and the announcement of my
solution to the problem. My solu
tion to the problem was simply
that the urban areas, under re
sponsible leadership of elected
officials, ban together to vote'
for officials of their choice in
the State General Election and
to boycott the State Democratic
Primary which is controlled bv
the County Unit System, I am
the only candidate or official who,
has come up with a practical and
feasible solution to these prob
lems and I have taken this fight
to the public bv appearances on
radio, television, and in the news
papers.
AFFIRMATIVE PROGRAMS
I have always in the past and
will always in the future fight
prejudice, injustice, and bigotry.
I do not know or pretend to
know all the answers to all the
problems and challenges now
facing the city of Atlanta; how
ever. I do say
that I will meet
these problems
with the same
enthusiasm, in
tegrity, ability,
dedication and
courage that I
have always
demonstrated in
the oast. I do
have solutions
for some of the
problems which
I will attempt to
outline as the campaign pro
gresses but which I cannot de
tail at this time because of
limited space.
CAN SLOTIN WIN?
Old-time politicians have told
me that they have never seen a
more enthusiastic and effective
campaign than the one in which
I am currently engaged. With
my objective and factual ap
proach and with mv fresh and
effective solutions to the city’s
problems. I have been able to
keen mv campaign wav ahead
at the other 44 candidates. I be
lieve I will win this election on
September 13 bv a landsilde of
votes from all sections of Atlanta
bv people who are sincere in
their desire for honest and effi
cient leadership.
SHOULD THERE BE
A JEWISH VOTE?
I do not think that the Jewish
voters shonld vote for a candi
date merely because he is Jew
ish. I believe, however, that if
a Jewish candidate is deserving
of Jewish support based mm his
own merits, that there should
be soch a thing as a Jewish vote.
Many visitors to Atlanta Ore
astounded at the fact that in a
citv bf this size, which has the
Jewish population and Jewish
leaders in all phases of civic,
religious, professional and busi
ness activities, does not have one
Jewish elected official in citv
government. In my opinion I
think that the best thing that
could happen to the Jewish com
munity in Atlanta is to elect a
Jewish man to the Board of
Alderman that the entire Jew
ish community can be proud of.
It is also mv observation that
there is some cause for alarm
growing out of the Temple bomb
ings. anti-Jewish meetings, and
distribution of anti-Semitic lit
erature. I believe that it is about
time that the Jewish community
bind themselves together in an
effort to take whatever action is
necessary to stem the tide of
these dangerous situations.
HOW CAN YOU HELP?
There are two wavs you can
help. First, I need active cam
paign workers to help distribute
cards, put up posters and signs,
help advise me on mv speeches
and advertising copy and to help
me in my fund raising. At the
present time the nucleus of mv
campaign workers are meeting
weekly at the Progressive Club
between 5:30-8 p.m. on Thurs
days. We are presently in the
\ process of setting up committees
to perform various functions. If
you can help us as an active
worker, please contact me at
headquarters JA. 4-0235 or call
mv Campaign Manager, Harris
Jacobs at JA. 2-4280. We make
two promises — no solicitations
for funds at meetings—meeting
over promptly at 8 p.m.
Second, I need financial help
to help pay for mv television,
radio, and newspaper advertise
ments. If you would like to make
a contribution please contact me.
In view of the time remaining,
send your check to Phillip Slotin.

There are many members of
the Jewish community who con
tribute generously to many im
portant causes. I believe that my
background proven honesty and
demonstrated dedication to fight
bigotry, prejudice, and racial in
justice and all those things which
the Jewish community opposes
entitle me to vour help on the
same basis as other good causes.
(Continued from page 25)
in proportion to the city’s ability
to participate. I would not be in
favor of taking very much of our
remaining bond capacity for this
purpose as i has been proposed by
some candidates.
Annexation. Under the Plan of
Improvement the city may annex
areas adjoining the city limits
when the population density
reaches certain proportions. Any
area demanding city services
should be in the city. Those citi
zens need Atlanta and Atlanta
needs more good citizens.
Transportation. Working close
ly with my friends in the State
Highway Department to urge
completion of the downtown con
nector of the expressway. An
overall survey of traffic lights,
one-way streets, and possibly
longer approaches into the ex
pressway, plus better markings.
Five-county Connell. Yes. I
have advocated a joint council
similar to this for several years.
I followed this procedure when
I was chairman of the Fire Pre
vention Committee of the Cham
ber of Commerce and this result
ed in a uniform building code for
the metropolitan area.
AFTER 48 YEARS
Polish-Born
Brothers
Reunited
PHILADELPHIA (JTA)—Two
brothers, who had last seen each
other in Wllun, Poland. 48 years
ago, have been reunited in Phila
delphia.
The reunion scene was the
Philadelphia International Air
port. The participants WOre Mor
ris Marcus of Philadelphia and
Shmuel Marcus of Israel. "We
couldn’t speak,” said Morris.
“You can imagine yourself what
it was like.”
Both can speak German,
French, Polish, Russian and He
brew but Shmuel does not know
any English. In a series of multi
lingual exchanges, the story was
unfolded.
In 1913, Morris, now 74, was
put in a military service in Rus
sia and soon afterwards emi
grated to Philadelphia with his
wife. The brother went to Ger
many with his wife, establishing
himself in business. His business
ruined by World War I, Shmuel
went to Palestine. Both brothers
had worked for the Zionist move
ment in Poland.
Unable to establish himself in
Palestine, Shmuel went to France.
There he worked for the Zionist
movement until the war broke
out and he was sent to a camp
at St. Denis. Four years later he
was liberated and settled once
more in Israel. A widower with
four sons, he lives in Ramat Gan.
After many years, he decided
the separation had been long
enough and came to the United
States on a visit.
