Chicago Readers Ask Rabbis
most of them are only profes
sional men out to make a living?"
This reader commented that “if
rabbis would conduct themselves
as men of God and teachers,
maybe they would be respected
accordingly.
“How do our rabbis expect us
to respect them as teachers,” he
argued, when they preach book
reports instead of the treasures
of the Talmud and when they
tell us about current events in
stead of the words of the Pro
phets?”

Hears WJC Report
On Egyptian Jews
UNITED NATIONS, (WUP) —
The World Jewish Congress last
week submitted a memorandum
to the UN Conference on State
lessness in which it charged that
the United Arab Republic’s Na
tionality Law No. 282 of 1959
discriminates against the Jewish
minority in Egypt by depriving
the Jews of their nationality—if
they have been known at any
time as Zionists.
Israel is among the eight states
that have ratified the “Conven
tion Relating to the Status of
Stateless Persons.” The UAR is
one of the 29 participants at the
current meetings.

CHICAGO, (JTA)—Readers of
the Chicago Jewish Sentinel are
engaged in a lively debate on
the role and status of the Ameri
can Rabbi. The discussion was
sparked by an editorial in the
English-Jewish weekly deploring
the fact that American Jews do
not accord sufficient respect to
the rabbi as a man of God and
spiritual leader.
One reader complained that
the rabbi was given the status
of “hired help” but without con
tractual protection hired usually
has. The rabbi should have a

For $65 Million
NEW YORK, (JTA) — Law
rence A. Wien, New York attor
ney, Jewish leader and president
of the Federation of Jewish
Philanthropies of New York be
came, this week, the owner of the
182-story Empire State Building
in New York, fulfilling an am
bition of many years’ standing.
Mr. Wien paid $65,000,000 for
the skyscraper, reputedly the
highest price ever paid for a
single building. He purchased
the edifice from a corporation
headed by Col. Henry Crown,
Chicago industrialist, whose bid
for the Empire State of $51,000,-
000 in 1951 topped Mr. Wien’s
unsuccessful offer and gave him
ownership.
Mr. Wien owns between 30 and
40 other large buildings in New
York and across the country. In
purchasing the world’s tallest
building, Mr. Wien did not ac
quire title to the land on which
it stands. The land was sold to
the Prudential Life Insurance
Company in 1951 and the build
ing owner must pay $1,020,000 a
year ground Tent Negotiations
for the sale of the building lasted
over three years. Mr. Wien ac

This reader noted, however,
that “I expect a rabbi to be a
leader and inform his congrega
tion, not about books, but about
anti-Semitism, about happenings
in Israel and about modern hap
penings in Jewish life as well as
pleasant and unpleasant events.”
Another reader charged that
“a few undersirables and mer
cenaries, imbued with glorifying
themselves have infiltrated the
rabbinate.” He proposed a “board
of reviewers” composed of rab
bis, a judge, a physician, a psy
chiatrist and a layman to ex
amine disputes before they go to
the civil courts.
Still another reader asked:
