AJCC Men’s League
The same old bunch of head
line hoggers (pardon the expres
sion) wallowed back into the
limelight last week, headed by
the Master himself, Hank (The
Hustler) Clayman, who is with
out a doubt the greatest finisher
in bowling circles in the city.
He’s the only guy I’ve ever seen
who can have about three opens
a game, and still end up with a
200 plus game, and he did just
that to come in with a fine 201-
201-222-624 top series . . . An
other good series was rolled by
Harold Maisel, the Professor, who
came in with a 211-159-201-571
series. You can call him Doctor
now, cause he just received a
P. H. D. in bowling — (that’s
Pretty Horrible Delivery). Also
having a good series (up to a
point) was Murray (Snapshot)
Gordon, who won third place in
a photo-finish with a 203-214-and
an under-developed 146 for a 563
series. . . . Next was a not-too-
good series by The Toymaker,
Richard Carl, with a 188-169-203-
560 — he’s been in a slump lately,
must be from those long trips to
the North Pole, but watch him
after the holiday season is over.
. . . One other good series worth
noting was thrown by an inter
loper, one Alvin Greenberg, who
ever he is, with a 195-190-170-555
(that couldn’t be the guy who
throws that big roundhouse noth
ing ball, could it?). Better re
check that sheet!
In the high singles dept, (that’s
where a bowler gets real lucky
for one game, thinks he’s finally
got it made, then throws his
usual lousy 135 game), top man
was Joe Rich with a 224 (then
back to Split City. . . . Don Dia
mond hit a 213 deposit, then
broke his drill on two big rocks.
. . . Spencer Carl curled out a 204
. . . Vic Leaf blossomed to a 202,
then the Leafs came tumbling
down. . . . Hy Ruben (that’s a
name, not a greeting) had a 201,
as did Icky (that’s a name?) Or-
enstein, and also Alvin (The
Hammer, not the Chipmunk)
Halpern. And speaking of ham
mers, the AJCC Developement
Fund now under way still needs
more workers and more working
cash, and if you have not been
contacted as yet, just call the
Center if you want to donate your
time and money to a very worthy
cause. This is a once-in-a-lifetime
fund drive, and Frank Fierman is
out driving around town day and
night in a car equipped with a
two-way radio for instant serv
ice, so let’s keep him real busy!!
Please remember that when these
workers do contact you, they are
giving hours of their time, and
only ask for minutes of yours, so
treat them with courtesy. Thanks!
. . . Now, back to bowling, can’t
figure what has happened to
Mendel (Baking Soda Fats) Sap-
erstein, who has been in such a
slump all season — he still has
the smoothest and best delivery
in the league (in fact, he hasn’t
been late on his bread route in
three years) — sure hope his
average rises as fast as his dough
again — he had such a nice smile!
I think I had better pick on some
body my size, so let’s go see how
the Bantams are doing.
AJCC Bantam league
Man, we could take some les
sons from these kids (especially
in sportsmanship). In the high
series Bruce (The Bruiser) Brow-
dy led the young-uns with a great
173-153 set for a 326 series. . . .
Lee Newman was next with a
141-141-282 series. . . . Ronnie
Verner had a 150-124-272 series
. . and Allen (The Socker) Socol
a 141 high single. . . . Wish I
could mention some of the girls
like Susan and Carol Cohen,
Anne Andrews, Judy Golson,
Sharon Galanti, and Marilyn
Benbenisty, who try so hard in
the league, but since they aren’t
the high scorers yet, I just can’t
write about them — maybe later,
OK?
AJCC Women’s League
Talk of the town for the next
few years was the fabulous game
thrown by that pretty dame with
the man’s name, Tension-free
Ernie Froug, who blasted out a
superman’s score of 262, after
having two other games of 166-
152 for an amazing 580 series.
This is the highest women’s
single ever rolled at Express
Lanes, and we’re all mighty
proud of that record! Ernie start
ed out with a four-bagger, then
caught her breath with two
spares, buckled down and got five
more strikes, then left a three pin
split to show that she was still
human, after all ... a great game
for a gal who really deserved it!
..In another fine series, Flo
Leaf rolled out a nice 155-175-
172-502 set. . . . Also to be com
mended was Sara Jo Goldberg,
the Bag Baroness (the kind under
your arm, not your eyes), who
bagged a fine set of 175-115-199-
489. In the high singles, Sylvia
Kaliser rolled a 186, and Mighty
Mouse Eleanor Levin had a 177.
Also with her highest game of
the season was Lee (Whirlaway)
Silverman with a big 156, and if
you add her handicap, a perfect
300! Lee almost got her first trur-
key, but got a nine pin tap —
that is, she got the ten pin, but
left the other nine standing!
The Womens’ league can use
two regular bowlers, and plenty
of subs, so if you are looking for
fun and exercise, call the Cen
ter for more info.
That’s the tenth frame, see . . .
oh, I forgot to mention Mickey
Frank’s three games — which
ought to make Mickey very
happy! . . . See you in the alley
next week!
