Speech less she stood by my side, her eyes dilated with wonder, as she watch ed the 'gaudy, glittering lights cascading in a giant, everchang- ing kaleidoscope. What of it that each dazzling constellation spelled yet another commercial product? Such discri mination does not intrude upon a child’s enchantment. A stream of people, disgorged from the many theatres in the vi cinity, carried us down Broadway, past the many shops, open and doing lively business at this late hour. Miriam can never resist buying souvenirs, in fact she would happi ly confine all her foreign travel to the gift-shops in each country. And what better hunting than Broad way and what an invitation to the salesman when you have TOUR IST written all over you? My attention was arrested by the display of some unspeakably hideous pottery, said to be Danish. “You a collector, ma’am?” A silky voice broke upon my con templation of so much wasted hu man effort. “No, no!” I hastened to assure the salesman. “Then it’s high time you started, ma’am, because there’s only a limited number of these pieces left and they increase in value each year.” What a wonderful oppor tunity for my heirs, I thought, while making a quick get-away. No sooner did I escape this per sistent gentleman when I found two ‘Dresden’ figurines thrust into my hands by another, equally efficient salesman. I nearly drop ped them with fright when I realized that Miriam actually wanted to buy them for me. “For Hanukah,” she whispered and suggested that if I advance the purchase price, she would pay me back weekly a part of her pocket money ... I do hope to live to a ripe old age but a business contract for 120 years seemed a little bit unrealistic. The figurines went quickly back onto the counter and Miriam forcibly out of the door. She was soon comforted when, a little later, I pointed out to her a shop much more in her line of business. “Necklaces at 25 cents” said the notice in the window. Inside how ever, we were told that the neck laces. were part of a set of three Complotaly Air-Conditionod with Individual Room Control Evory Room with Privoto Both and Showor Olympic Siio Swimming Pool and Cabana Club Snack Bar Boach * Solarium Cocktail Loungo Card Room Tolavition Room Froo Parking OVERLOOKING THE OCEAN COLLINS AVE.
