David had such imagination and
in no time began to dream of some
device or method of duplicating.
Printing itself was too expensive
and cumbersome a medium to be
contemplated.
He created a copying process
but it was clumsy and quite messy
in application.
David experimented and found
what seemed a remedy. He could,
he found, write on tissue paper
with a sharp-pointed stylus against
a roughened surface Then he could
place this tissue on a metal plate
thickly coated with violet dye.
The words he wrote now trans
ferred to every sheet they came
in contact with—provided that
slight pressure was applied.
His uncle was encouraging,
praising the invention and the
appearance of copies it made.
Nevertheless, he felt that his ne
phew would never master the art
of penmanshnip in the elaborate
