Such family discouragement was not enough to stop young David. But the after-effects of the col lapse of the Viennese Bourse were. Unable to persuade anyone to pro vide capital for continuing his ex periments, he could see no future for him in Austria. So he set out for America. Robbed of his purse by a pick pocket while asleep in a station waiting room, he had to find some way quickly to earn the pennies needed for food and shelter. He tried several jobs before he became curb-stone peddler of Japanese kites and fans. Thus fate brought together the factors which were to furnish the inspiration he needed. One day the fabric of one of his kites became torn and he noticed Extending Joyous Holiday Greetings JULIUS WACHTEL w Hub Motors FORD CARS AND TRUCKS 370 Peachtree St., N.E. Different from any paper he had ever seen, he was im pressed with the filmy threads which clung together resisting any effort to tear the paper. To the young man, ideas started to crowd in on his active mind, as he vis ualized a use for this light, yet strong material. If you cut a let ter, or a figure, such as an O, the middle would not drop out—the fibres would hold it. And so the idea of the stencil evolved. It was to be the main working premise in the duplicating machine he later was to develop. By 1877, he had managed to save enough money to go to Eng land and open a tiny workshop in London. He created a crude, but workable, flat box duplicator and with this under his arm, he trudged from office to office, get ting a hundred refusals to each hard-won sale. His enthusiasm however did not dampen and he persisted. He built, he experimented and he built. He built and he peddled. He peddled and he improved. He had a fabulous idea on a leash, an idea which scores of office managers were quick to sense and appreciate. He tried numerous ways of coating the kite paper, called Takomatsu, with a kind of fluid which preserved and improved its viability. On July 3, 1880, he was granted a patent for his process.
