and more will come. The problem
in Israel now is not the ingather
ing, but the fusing together of peo
ple into one entity. It is one of
the numerous problems Israel is
grappling with.
It can, however, be stated with
certainty that spiritual ingather
ing has been achieved. There’s no
Jew in the world today, with the
exception of an insignificant few,
whose heart does not beat for the
Jewish life equipped to give mean
ing and direction to the Jewish
people in its further march. The
Jewish State is both fact and sym
bol of Jewish future. It brings back
to the Jewish fold those Jews who
have been partly or even wholly
estranged from their people by
convincing them that Jewish re
sponsibility for themselves and the
world is not an abstraction. Jew
ish State is Jewish pride for every
one who was born a Jew.

The existence of the Jewish
State opens wide possibilities for
a fertile education of young Jew
ish generations in the Diaspora.
The idea and meaning of the State
needs only to be formulated in its
proper historic sense, in its ideol
ogic perspective, and with neces
sary effort brought to Jewish gene
rations, young and old, for the
spark of perennial Jewish idealism
to burst into flame, shedding light
not only upon the State, but upon
the people and the world.
Where else in the world is there
an army whose dream is peace,
whose military code is the scrip
tures, whose desire is not to de
stroy but build?
Israel has built up an army with
the idea of abolishing all armies.
Where else is the army imbued,
together with military theory and
practice, with the ideals of the
prophets?
He who stands on Israel soil,
visitor or resident, and does not
feel that a synthesis of East and
West takes place there, which will
give birth to a new song — a song
as old as the world and as new
as the morning sun — has not yet
grasped Israel — its present and
future.
In Israel you come face to face
with a dynamism whose equal is
hard to find anywhere in the
world. Generations of pent-up
energy is unloaded there—to build
roads, factories, houses, hospitals,
schools, etc. But behind all this,
the third, the inner ear, appre
hends an old-new melody straining
through the whole of Jewish his
tory — the song of the free man.
Standing for the first time on
Israel soil I had the rare feeling
and an inner voice has prompted,
that with the continued growth of
the state things will straighten
themselves out, mistakes com
mitted will be rectified, the uni
versal mold will be forged to give
valid expression to state and peo
ple, and emerge before the eyes of
an amazed world as an example of
a just society.
