Controversy
Among
Rabbis
Over
Slavery
by HARRY SIMONHOFF
During the administration of
James Buchanan, Judaism received
official recognition. The Orthodox
Rabbi of B’nai Jeshurun in New
York was invited to open a morn
ing session of the House of Rep
resentatives. Rabbi Morris Jacob
Raphall, wrapped in a talis and
wearing a skull cap, prayed before
the national lawmakers in Wash
ington.
Today the morning prayer in
Congress is routine. The papers
scarcely name the Protestant, Ca
tholic, or Jewish minister who hap
pens to officiate. A century ago the
situation was quite different. The
Catholic minority regarded the
Know Nothing Party a threat to
its civil rights or religious freedom.
Jews were distressed at the con
stant efforts to insert the word
Christian into the Federal Consti
tution. Rabbi Raphall’s invocation
took on meaning during the War of
Secession when the controversy
about appointing Jewish chaplains
for the armed forces became a dis
turbing issue.
Lincoln had been elected but not
yet inaugurated. President Bu
chanan proclaimed a National Fast
Day as a final, desperate act to
avert the impending crack-up of
the Union. People of all denomina
tions gathered in their houses of
worship for prayer. Rabbi Raphall,
seizing this occasion to preach a
sermon on “The Bible View of
Slavery,’’ declared:
“The New Testament nowhere,
directly or indirectly, condemns
slaveholding, which is proved by
the universal practice of all Christ
ian nations during many centuries.
Receiving slavery as one of the
conditions of society, the New
Testament nowhere interferes with
or contradicts the slave code of
Moses; it even preserves a letter
written by one of the most eminent
Christian teachers to a slave-owner
Saul of Tarsus sent back the runa
way slave, Onesimus, into his
owner Philemon . . .
“On the most solemn occasion
recorded when God gave the Ten
Commandments on Mount Sinai
. . . slaveholding is not only recog
nized and sanctified as an integral
part of the social structure, when
it is commanded that the Sabbath
of the Lord is to bring rest to ‘thy
male slave and they female slave’
