Mm. *4, Dec 1, 2, U
eight-year course and became a
notable rabbi and finally profes
sor of the college. But I . . .!
He’s a rabbi who knows Juda
ism at its social angle, and what
it means along the way of life.
As I understand his Judaism, it
hasn’t so much to do with syna
gogues as with the nobler way of
men doing in the world, as bro
thers to all the human race.
Well, now about this new
book of his . . . “Stories Made of
Bible Stories” ... a book of 308
pages in which he tells Bible
stories in his own bright, inter
esting social-minded way. I have
space here for only one of his
many stories. It’s about Cain and
Abel . . . and so in his own re
cital about Cain and Abel, Abe
Cronbach takes this column over
from here on:
He reports .on Cain and Abel:
“For ages, people believed that
the smoke ascending from the
altar went up into the sky, there
by reaching God, who enjoyed
the smell of the smoke, and this
was supposed to put God in a
friendly mood. Such was the
kind of religion which brought
about the quarrel between Cain
and Abel. Throughout human
history certain kinds of religion
have set people against one an
other. Quarrels over religion oc
cur to this very day.
“Like Abel, in the ancient
story, hordes of people have
perished in such quarrels. The
kind of religion men need is a
religion that makes for peace,
not one that makes for fighting.
Like a warning to all future
generations, the Bible, near its
very beginning, tells how some
kinds of religion create not
friendship and good will but
persecution and strife.
Dr. Cronbach goes on: “The
usual penalty for murder is
death. But there are some for
eign countries and some states
in our own country in which the
death penalty has been abolished.
In our own country there has
long existed the American
League to Abolish Capital Pun
ishment. The league is headed
by a Jewish woman, Mrs. Her
bert B. Ehrmann. It has been
proved that capital punishment
does not prevent crime . . . The
way to prevent murder is to have
surroundings so wholesome that
people will not be tempted to
murder.”
Then Dr. Cronbach reports on
God’s own doing in the renown
ed murder case of Cain vs. Abel.
Cain himself was expecting to
die for killing his brother, but
no! Dr. Cronbach reports in his
story of the murder: “Like any
just judge, God takes all the
circumstances into account. The
punishment would not be death.
Cain would have to leave his
farm and go into exile ... In our
modern system we apply parole
. . . The story of Cain puts us
in mind of parole . . . We per
ceive the wisdom of the Divine
Judge . . . Yes, Cain, the first
murderer, becomes Cain, the
first citizen . . . Cain, the first
murderer becomes Cain the lov
ing father."
Oh yes, a lot of very good citi
zens issued from this paroled .
Cain. Dr. Cronbach reports on
Cain’s great-great grandson
Lamech who himself became
father of “a nest of genius . . .
three sons, every one of whom
became an inventor . . . Cain, the
murderer, becomes the ancestor
of those who, by their discov
eries, founded civilization.”
There was also Cain’s nephew
named Enosh who discovered
how to pray, and the Book of
Genesis says of him, “Then be
gan men to call upon the name
of the Lord.” And this anti
capital punishment rabbi ... Dr.
Cronbach . . . concludes with
victorious emotion his chapter
on Cain and Abel: “Thus does
the story of Cain, a story which
begins with disaster, tell of the
divine guidance which drew good
out of evil, which brought citi
zenship and home life and pre
cious inventions, and . . . devout
prayer; blessings, all of them
out of an occurence fraught with
immesaurable woe.”
Well, I myself go along with
Dr. Cronbach on the matter of
Cain’s life being saved by God
rather than his being executed . .
so that Cain was enabled to
grow up to be a decent citizen
and distinguishable grandpa. I,
as reporter for the daily press
have witnessed four men dying
in the electric chair and one
hanged. And after each of these
executions I have thought, “Oh,
how easy it is to die that way;
it takes only a second to die by
public execution! A term of liv
ing in prison would be harder
punishment than just dying that
way.’’
And now I thank Dr. Cronbach
sincerely for doing most of this
column for me, and taking the
pressure off my poor mind . . .
so poor, indeed, that it lasted on
ly a year at Hebrew Union Col
lege in which Dr. Cronbach was
graduated with high honor. His
book is dedicated thus:
To the Memory of My Father
Marcus Cronbach
Who, though unschooled and
speaking with a foreign ac
cent would tell us small chil
dren stories of striking origi
nality and side-splitting hu
mor, inventing as he went
along.”
