Weekly Blasts
le wish Comedian
For *Obscene* Jokes
WINNIPEG, (JTA) —The Is
raelite Press this week de
nounced as “obscene and insult
ing” two items of alleged Jew
ish humor presented by Myron
Cohen on the Ed Sullivan trans
continental television program
of November 12.
One of the jokes, the Jewish
weekly reported, relating to a
personal exchange of the pri
vate common ethnic tokens
shared by him and Mayor Robert
Briscoe of Dublin “was merely
sexually suggestive and obscene.”
The other portrayed a rabbi
whose car had collided with that
of a priest. The weekly said the
rabbi was portrayed “as a con
niving, shrewd, immoral, heavi
ly accented alien who clevely
foists the responsibility for the
incident on the Gentile by of
fering enough liquor to incrim
inate the priest with the police.
All the ugly stereotypes are pre
sented.”
The weekly asserted that “for
the mirth derived” from Cohen’s
jokes, “the Jews of this conti
nent are paying dearly. How
Jewish public relations and de
fense organizations can, in clear
conscience, take hundreds of
dollars from communal funds, for
their so-called public relations
efforts, and out of sheer timidity
ignore the corrosive impact of
Myron Cohen, shocks me.
Adenauer Promises
To Aid Jews Who
Suffered Under Nazis
WASHINGTON, (JTA)—West
German Chancellor Konrad Ade
nauer is on record as promising
to help settle the claims of Jew
ish victims of Nazism who suf
fered physical injuries under the
Nazi regime.
This was announced here this
week by Moses I. Socachevsky,
president of the Jewish Nazi
Victims Association. A delega
tion representing the organiza
tion met with Dr. Adenauer
prior to his departure for Ger
many this week.
Israel’s Trade Gap
Rises as Capital
Goods Imports Increase
JERUSALEM, (JTA)—Israel’s
foreign trade deficit increased
by $31,000,000 to a total of $174,-
000,000 for the first six months
of 1961, compared with $143,-
000,000 for the same period last
year, it was reported here this
week.
The report showed that the in
crease in Israel’s foreign trade
gap was due to a rise in the im
ports of capital goods, especially
ships and aircraft, which totaled
$41,000,000 in the period com
pared with only $8,000,000 dur
ing the first half of 1960.

Catholic Paper
Nixes Offer
Of Anti-Semitism
GUATEMALA CITY, (JTA)—
The owner of the Catholic week
ly, “Ya," announced last week
that a large bribe has been of
fered the publication if it would
publish an “evidently criminal”
book which “is nothing but an
incitement to kill” Jews. Miss
Elly Rodriguez Gonzales, owner
of “Ya,” resentfully rejected the
offer, declaring “we cannot be
anti-Semitic because we are
Catholics, nor can we become
advocates for criminals because
we are humans.”
According to Miss Gonzalez,
the offer, involving “enough
funds for us to bcome a daily,”
was made by a local “public of
ficial.” The man, she said, want-
er “Ya” to publish a book which
was “obviously a Nazi legacy
embracing more than 100 years
of racial prejudices with the ob
ject of re-initiating hatreds and
their consequences which, thank
God, have been overcome after
the most bloody war in the his
tory of mankind.”
Harvard Students
Cancel Project
For Jordan Aid
CAMBRIDGE, Man, (JTA)—
A Harvard University student
organization decided Monday to
withdraw from participation in
a project sponsored by CARE in
Jordan because that country
would have barred Jewish stu
dents from taking part.
The project, known as “Opera
tion Jarba,” had been adopted
by Phillips Brooks House, a
Harvard student social service
organization, which was plan
ning to send a group of 20 or 30
students to Jordan to help re
settle displaced Bedouins. Re
cent discussions with CARE offi
cials, however, warned represen
tatives of Phillips Brooks House
that there would be no chance
of including Jewish students in
the project.
The decision to withdraw
from the project was made by
the service organization after
consultation with the Faculty
Committee which declined to ap
prove the plans for participation
by Harvard students. Student
applicants were notified by mail
of the cancellation of the pro
ject. t
Harvard Dean John Monro,
who is a member of the TamMy
Committee, told the service or
ganization: “I don’t want Phillips
Brooks House, rMtfeaantinA Har
vard, to be involved in a project
where you ask questions about
religious belief and make a de
cision on this basis.”
