A.KT Men’s League
Due to the pressures of the
holiday business, when most of
the bowlers are busy trying to
make an honest buck or two, the
league declared a short holiday
for last week, so no report on
them today.

Since the fathers were so
busy, and some of the mothers
were helping them, the kids had
no way to get to the bowling
alley, so they also declared a
short holiday. (Although the
kids could easily bowl three or
four games, then dance the twist
three or four hours, you’d be
out of your mind to expect them
to walk three or four blocks—
only Harry Truman would do
something that drastic!)
AJCC Womens’ League
In the meanwhile, back at the
ranch (house), the women were
all looking forward to some ex
tra spending money, and were
busy reading the after-holiday
specials in the papers, so they,
too, called off the bowling for
the week. (Can’t you just see
them rubbing their hands to
gether and plotting against their
husbands’ charge-a-plates—while
the managers at Rich’s and
Davison’s are doing the same
thing? t

The scores in this league will
not be as high as in the AJCC
Leagues, because (1) The bowl
ers are tired on Sunday nites
after fighting with the kids all
day.
(2) There is more distraction
in mixed leagues, since the male
animal does not have the pati
ence of the female, and would
rather bowl than talk about hair
styles, dresses, sales, and the

way so-and-so looks in tight

(3) Th? bowlers are tired on
Sunday nites after fighting with
each other all day.
(4) Finally, the male bowlers
are not in too good a frame of
mind, especially when one of the.
girls asks them where to stand
to make the 7-10 split.
Keeping all this in mind, here
is how tbmgs shaped up Sunday
nite . High series was rolled
by (Pin) Buster Silberstein,
with a fine 211-160-213-584 set,
which is good in any league
(Buster slept all day Sunday)
. Next, with a steady 201-191-
173-565 series was the Fifth
Horseman, Icky Orenstein (his
wife, Doris, was in New York)
In third place, with a 224
start, a 135 middle (his average
game) and a 200 finish, for a
559 set, was Howard (Holey
Roller) Aronin (his wife, Shir
ley, slept all day Sunday) . . .
Another good set was the 163-
176-216-555 by Doe (Nature Boy)
Cohen, who happens to have lots
of patience (he smolces one cigar
for three days). . , .
Back again after a long road
trip (and bowling as if he had
walked half the way) was Bob
(Bojangles) Maran, the south
paw Gower Champion, who had
his greatest game in league
bowling, a fine 227—sure miss
his wife, Swedt Sue, who is tak
ing time .off for a very good rea
son, about seven pounds worth,
I’d predict . . . Also rolling his
highest game ever was Lenny
Meyer, the Whiskey-Head (deal
er of, not irpbiber in) who blast
ed out a big 227 game, and gen
erously offered everybody drinks
on the house (he knew the grill
was closed—the tight-wad!) . .
And speaking of the grill,
sure hope that George Mannas,
the popular Bagel Baron of Ex
press Lanes, is feeling much bet
ter after a visit to the hospital
(I told him no human could
possibly eat two of those bagels
at one sitting—now he knows!)
In the womens’ division, Jean
(The Axe) Axelrod, the Jewish
Babe Zaharias, whacked out a
140-143-169-452 series to take top
spot in high set for the nite
(she’s better at golf, tho—takes
after hubby Danny, who is
teaching her the game his way
—cheating!) , .
And Nimble Norma Schiff
schlepped the ball up and down
for a fine 143-136-158-437 series
(her best activity is sports-car
driving, where she is really a
champ—has nine carpools a
week, and set a record by carry
ing eleven kids in one trip—in
a Volkswagen, yet!) . . . Selma
Singer also bowled, and she
looked stunning in a blue-green
lambswool sweater, with match
ing paints ... as for her score
— who cares! . . .
Would like to take this op
portunity to wish all you read
ers (and you too, Mendel) a
very Happy New Year, with lots
of strikes (labor excluded),
plenty of spares, and very few
splits (especially for you diet
ers). Seriously, tho, thanks very
much for the compliments on
this column, even from non-
bowlers like Dorothy London,
Monk (The Hunk) Dorfan, the
former basketball great, and Lee
Silverman!
That’s the tenth frame — see
you in the alleys next year!
