THI tOVTIIBN I8BAILIII
Behind UN Scenes — by David Horowitz
Horoscope For Mideast
UNITED NATIONS, (WIJP)
History the very force which
the Arab delegates distortedly
hurled like thunderbolts against
Israel in the General Assembly—,
has now caught up with the Arab
states in a manner so devastating
that it has all but fragmentized
the rickety structure of so-called
Arab unity.
The Arabs had been so busy
re-writing the history of Zionism
from Dr Theodor Herzl on to
Balfour and the UN Partition de
cision that they had lost all sight
of the more immediate historic
forces which have caught up
with them on the street-crossing
from 1961 to 1962.
Perhaps the most important
factor is the march of the eco-

nonue and social revolution in
Egypt which compelled Nasser
to break away frfim Syria’s ad
vanced capitalistic society, on the
one hand, and the feudal systems
of Yemen and Saudi Arabia, on
the other. Thus the Dictator of
the Nile, last week, dissolved his
“federation” with Yemen and
pulled out his army from Kuwait
where it combined with contin
gents of Saudi Arabia to hold
the Sheikdom against Iraq
In short, Nasser’s attempt to
build an “Arab Nation” with
himself as spiritual leader has
completely and totally collapsed.
Confronted with such a disas
trous retreat-—affecting his posi
tion at home he was quick to
announce a domestic policy of
“socialism.” A new propaganda
war launched against the Imam
of Yemen and King Hussein of
Jordan would seem to indicate
that he has not abandoned his
aspiration to head all Arabia—
under the banner of a Socialist
revolution.
* If this is so, then his cold war
with his sister Arab states, a war
of “socialism” against feudalism,
is likely to be a protracted one
assuring the Arabs a long period
of divisionism—and a period in
which there will be little time
to build up strength against Is
rael
Thus the world’s economic-
social revolution has caught up
with the Arab leaders ,and they
must now heed History which
tells them: “Gentlemen, it is not
Zionism of democratic Israel but
Socialism which you must face

Another factor rocking the
Arab boat is the liberation of
colonial areas Iraq seeks Ku
wait and Saudi Arabia cherishes
Oman and other Truscan oil
states. Hand in hand with the
rise of Socialism among the
masses is the rise of nationalism.
The British don’t intend to be
caught with a “Goa” or a “West
Irian” where the new-born states
stand ready to use force against
the Big Powers. Hence British
forces are converging on the
area. This and Egypt’s national
ization thrust against French
property is pitting the Arabs in
a cold war against the colonial
states which will leave them
little time or energy for attack
ing the Jewish State.
A third factor is North Africa
where the French appear likely
to negotiate their differences
with Tunisia over Bizerte and
with Algeria over the war. If all
this ends happily, Tunisia and
Algeria together with Morocco
and, perhaps, even Lybia are
more likely to revert to their
original Maghreb regional unity
plan than to a partnership with
the Middle East Arabs and their
shattered house.
A fourth factor is Africa. The
adjourned Assembly has shown
that the new twenty-nine states
of this great continent are less
interested in the Arab grudge
against Israel thab in obtaining
technical and economic assist
ance from both Israel and the
Arabs. And in this the Arabs are
faring rather badly. They must
either build up their own in
dustry and technology to aid
their African brothers or leave
$125,000 Gift Makes
Possible Firsi Camp
For Omaha Jewrv
OMAHA, (JTA) — A gift of
$125,000 will make possible the
start of construction of a com
plete camp for the Osaha Jew
ish community, according to
Harry Trustin, president of the
Omaha Jewish Federation.
The gift was made in memory
of Esther K. Newman by Jule
Newman and his sons. The camp
will be called the Esther K.
Newman camp in memory of an
outstanding civic leader of Oha-
ha. Mrs. Newman died in 1956.
Trustin said that for the past
24 years, temporary camps have
been operated in rented facili
ties. The permanent camp will in
clude 16 camper cabins, lodge
and dining room, health lodge
and infirmary, swimming pool,
baseball field, a horse corral,
baseball field, rifle and archery
ranges and athletic and play
areas. Garage, storage and of
fice facilties also are planned.
Israel Press Opposes
Eichmann Sentence
Commutation
TEL AVIV, (JTA)—The Israel
press has unanimously upheld
the Jerusalem District Court’s
guilty verdict and death sent
ence for Adolf Eichmann.
All newspapers rejected re
quests for commutation of
Eichmann’s sentence to life im
prisonment Editorials pointed
out there can be no connection
between the principle of moral
opposition to capital punishment
and the sentence to hang Eich
mann, since, m this instance, he
had been condemned not only of
crimes against the Jewish peo
ple but also of crimes against
humanity.
Leading articles pointed out
that Israel abolished the death
sentence 4or murder, but retain
ed such a penalty specifically
for the crime of genocide, of
which Eichmann has now been
convicted.
the whole continent to Israel.
Two elementary components are
involved here First, the Arabs
must build their own house more
and tear down Israel less. Sec
ond, as Israel becomes more im
portant in the economic develop
ment of the Africans, the Arabs
attack on Israel becomes an at
tack on a vital source of Afri
can aid.
Yes, time and history are
catching up with the Arabs—the
precious time they lost in bat
tling the Israelis and the history
of the current realities they ig
nored while romancing with the
viewpoints of Toynbee.
The year 1962 should be a
promising one for Israel. For the
Arabs it will be a year of trial
and tribulation, a year of chal-
lege to their statesmanship and
realism.
