world for graduate studies in
American universities. The one
proviso is that upon graduation
they must return to their native
countries to work so that this
program is not only of personal
benefit to the recipients but also
to their countries as well. Al
though students are chosen on

The latest development in fall
out shelters, on view at Grand
Central in New York, is designed
to be “a home away from home”
complete with “stove, refrigera
tor, chandelier, a red couch,
pastel walls, a Danish magazine
rack, and—fluorescent lighting
in the bathroom.” These manu
facturers have thought of every
thing, even a shelter that would
“assure privacy for adults—so
that children aren’t exposed to
influences detrimental to their
sexual development.” Great,
man, not a thing to worry about.
taking. “But what," hi' cried
tearfully “if he were a Yankee
fan?”
The other day I heard a su
perb rendering over the CBS
Network TV program ‘Lamp Un
to My Feet” of “Ariel: Visions of
Isaiah” a choral opus by the Is
raeli composer Robert Starer
The program originated from
the Catholic Church of the Savi
our in New York and has also
been performed by the Protest
ant Union Theological Seminary.
The work was originally com
missioned by the International
Fellowship Chorus and premier
ed in New York’s Town Hall. So
far all denominations have seen
fit to perform this masterful
composition by the Israel com
poser except—Jewish!!!
Any takers, please?

One of the most worthwhile 1

CHALLENGING CAREERS
FOR YOUNG WOMEN
Cytotechnologists — specialists in the study of human body
cells — arc in growing demand today, as more and more
doctors make the “Pap smear" a routine part of their examina
tion of women patients. This detection aid is a major factor
in conquering uterine cancer, the second greatest cancer killer
among women.
The cytotechnologist is the good right hand of the pathologist.
To her trained eye, the microscope reveals the very secrets of
life. Her judgment and alertness can mean the difference
between life and death to women.
Security, pleasant colleagues and the satisfaction of being part
of an all-out attack on the most dreaded of diseases are sonio
of the satisfactions in this rewarding new profession.
Chemistry or biology students who have completed two
years of college (or the equivalent) can qualify for this
new career field.

I don't know what the New
York Yankees would do with
out my eight-year-old son Hillel,
but it is a fact that he is a hu
man baseball encyclopedia and
provides the whole neighborhood
with any information they desire
regarding batting averages, his
tory. and potential of any player
or club in the major leagues. It
is his ambition in life to one day
get out there in Yankee Stadium
and beat both Ruth’s and Maris’
record. The other day on his way
to a baseball game of his own
he could not find his Yankee
baseball cap. Calamity of cala
mities We searched high and
low for it, with no success and
my son finally was convinced
that a thief had stolen it. I re
monstrated with him that it was
unlikely that a thief would find
this the only booty worth while

I was glad to read that Toby
t Ellen Saks, a 19-year-old girl
from the Bronx, won the first
prize in the junior section of the
Third Pablo Casals International
Cello Competition held in Jeru
salem, under the auspices of the
America-Israel Cultural Founda
tion I have been following her
career evur since my husband,
as one of'the regional judges of
the Merriwether Post Competi
tion, elected to send her on to
the national contest. Last June,
Miss Saks was awarded the Mu
Phi Epsilon prize as the out
standing woman student at the
Juilliard School of Music.
The Rabbinate can console
themselves—their loss has been
the cabaret worlds’ gain. Yes, in
credibly enough, Jackie Mason,
who recently appeared at the
Blue Angel in New York, used
to be the Rabbi in Weldon, N. C.,
where he convulsed his congre
gations with his sermons and
was asked to become a comedi
an. In one routine he mimics
President Kennedy and for this
he substitutes a clipped Boston
accent for his natural East Side
one.
“If we—move forward—on a
daily basis — we’ll have — The
Daily Forward.”
Of the tough neighborhood in
which he was raised, he has
this to say, “We played’eops and
robbers—with real cops. We
played hopscotch -— with real
scotch.”
Saving Lives from Cancer
Porter W. Carswell of Waynesboro (left), new president of
the American Cancer Society’s Georgia Division, discusses with
Arthur L. Montgomery, president of the Atlanta Coca-Cola Bot
tling Co. and chairman of the Cancer Society’s public education
and mass media program in Georgia, the appeal Montgomery has
made to business firms, newspapers, radio and television stations
and theaters “to reach the estimated 4,260 Georgians in whom
cancer started in the past six months.” “The opportunities for
cure of at least one-half are good if they are properly treated
In the early stage,” Montgomery said. A.C.S. Unit volunteers
have been urged to push the program this winter in all counties.
