Al 77, Retired Manufacturer
NEW YORK—Edward Jacobs,
a prominent American Zionist
and a member of a leading At

December 22 He was 77.
The funeral w.as held Decem
ber 24 at the Society for the Ad
vancement of Judaism, the Syna
gogue center for the Reconstruc
tionist Movement of America
Dr Mordecai M Kaplan, found

the eulogy at the funeral Dec. 24.
Other rites were conducted by
Professor Shalom Spiegel. In
terment took place in Mt. Eden
Cemetery in Westchester.
Mr. Jacobs was the hiteband of
Mrs. Rose Jacobs, the former
Rose Zell, who had served as

and a member of the Jewish
Agency executive. Mrs. Jacobs is
now honorary president of Ha-
dassah.
Mr. Jacobs came to Atlanta as
a young boy with his parents, the
late Abraham and Rosa Jacobs,
and his two brothers and three
sisters, who survive.
His father was a founder of
Ahavath Achim Synagogue and
for several decades was noted as
a teacher of Hebrew to several
generations of Atlantans.
In an article written last year
for The Southern Israelite mag
azine on the Jacobs Family Cir
cle, Mrs. Jacobs recalled that at
an early age, most of the Hebrew
teacher’s children went to work
at various jobs to assist the
meager income their father re
ceived from his profession.
Her husband’s first pay was
supposed to be $20 a week, al
though this was considerably de
creased due to the .fact that he

New Orleans to address a meet
ing of communal leaders and
chairmen under sponsorship of
the ADL. Subject of his talk was
the Arab Refugee Problem and
the debate on the subject in the
U N. He also made plans for the
itinerary of the first visit Which
Israel Ambassador Avraham Har
man will make to New Orleans
and the South on January 10, 11
and the following week.
On December 14, he shifted his
scene of operations to another
state, Florida, also in the region
he serves. He addressed a meet
ing of the Jewish Federation of
Greater Miami, again speaking
on the U N. debate on the Arab
Refugee Problem.
He had expected to be able to
relax in Atlanta that weekend,
appearing officially for greetings
at the joint dinner of Congrega
tion Shearith Israel and Congre
gation Or Ve Shalom. When at
the last minute, the evening’s
entertainer, Jan Bart, failed to
appear because of adverse
weather flying conditions it was
Consul Dover who had to fill in
as the main speaker. That he was
not at a loss for words is one of
the reasons, no doubt, why he
is in the diplomatic service of his
country.
On December 19, he made a
talk before the “Life Begins at
Fifty” Club at the Atlanta Jew
ish Community Center.
That Saturday evening, he and
his wife entertained at an infor
mal cocktail party in honor of
the former Atlanta Vice Consul
Uri Gordon whose marriage to
Atlanta’s Raiza Lyn Janus was
an event of December 24.
And according to protocol, he
had the honor of being the best
man at the wedding itself the
following day.
Any spare time between these
more or less public appearances
and engagements, the Consul
spent attending to the hundreds
of routine demands for his serv
ices at the Consulate itself.

Mr Jacobs left Atlanta around
40 years ago and engaged in the
manufacture of machinery in
New York before his retirement
He had been cited by the Uni
ted States Government following
World War I for his services as
a “dollar-a-year” man. He had
worked in Washington on the
War Trade Board under the sup
ervision of Bernard Baruch.
As his wife rose to national
prominence and leadership in
Hadassah, Mr. Jacobs took his
place on the sidelines, devoting
his efforts to making possible
the dedication and inspiration
she brought to the movement.
The couple was frequently host
to numerous national figures in
Jewish activities. One of their
closest friends was Dr. Kaplan,
who for years had enjoyed Seder
in the Jacobs household.
Mr. Jacobs leaves two children,
Dr. Ruth Levy of San Jose, Calif.,
and Joshua Jacobs of St. Louis,
several grandchildren, nieces and
nephews.
He is survived also by his bro
thers J. B. and Hyman Jacobs of
Atlanta; and three sisters, Mrs.
Annie LuKel of Mobile, Mrs.
Minnie Kessler of Atlanta and
Mrs. Becky Clein of Miami.
In official resolutions pub
lished in the New Yor^ Times,
his passing was memorialized by
t h e Zionist Organization of
America, by the Society for the
Advancement of Judaism as a
“devoted member of the Congre
gation from its earliest days”
and by National Hadassah.
