Bowling Bits ^
by EDDIE SILVERBOARD
AJCC Men’s League
Last week saw a new record
go into the books, as cigar smok
ing Doe Cohen earned the nick
name of “Wild Bull of the Tam-
pas” by smashing the pins for a
new high series in AJCC bowling
history, a red-hot 235-221-216-
672 set. And to prove that it
wasn’t a fluke, Nature Boy
drifted over to another lane and
in open bowling, whicked out
two more games in the 230s. Talk
about rolling a hot ball, Doe put
a cold cigar up against it, took
two puffs, and darned if he didn’t
light up as if it were a welding
torch! Congrats on a great ser
ies, Mr. Arms.
In a slight reversal of form,
we had some fine bowling by a
few new-comers to stardom . . .
Second high set was written by
Jerry (Sabu) Rittenbaum, who
put together a 186-176-219 for a
big 581 series—that’s what you
call a rags to riches success
story! . . . Back in form for third
high was Marshall (Blacksmith)
Nirenbaum, who laced together
a 193-185-200 for a fine 578 ser
ies .. . And Mr. Clean, Arnold
Hoffman, celebrated his return
from Wall St. with a 223-176-176-
575set to prove that a good ath
lete never loses his form—just
his hair! . . . Another well-earn
ed series was that thrown by Vic
(I’ve been sick) Leaf, who must
have gotten tired of reading
about wife Flo every week, and
slashed out a 185-154-234-573 set.
In the high single division, had
quite a fdw of them, best of
which was a 223 flipped by Old
Ironsides, Murray Gordon . . .
Next was a 221 by Joe Rich, who
also had a respectable 54!) ser
ies . . . And the erratic Don Dia
mond had a 14 carat game of 218,
plus a well-polished 556 series . ..
The Little General, Paul Sifen,
had a big 210, then a little 136—
must have had a lot of after-
Christmas exchanges, eh Paul?
. And if you guys think I’m
going to write about your big
scores, you’re nuts.
I get my kicks seeing the giants
fall once in a while (ain’t I a
stinker?) . . . For instance, Rich
ard (Mr. Wonderful) Carl, who
only has a 185 average, ended up
one game with a powerful 130
score, a busted ankle (so he says)
and an amazed expression on his
face . . . Speaking of the giants,
one guy who has turned out to
be a giant-killer is Morris Man
ning, who really has been knock
ing off the high teams with some
great pressure bowling, and
seems to improve with age — I
think he is our most elder mem
ber, but he tries harder than
anybody in the league—keep it
up, Killer (until you play our
team, of course) . . .
Two of my brothers-in-law
made the headlines last week
first Jack (Diamond-Mine) Clein,
the well-known international
jewel chief (that’s a C, Mr.
Printer, not a T), who proved
that he is as familiar with ten
pins as he is with stickpins, by
mining a fine 208 game, and a
501 series, not bad for a guy with
a 138 average . . . My other
brother-in-law, Dizzy Izzy Tara-
toot, the well-known chef, who
is lots better with a bowl of salad
than a bowling ball, should score
much higher after sweating out
his first grandson, born to Bev
and Hal Krafchick — congrats,
Grandpa . . .

now back to the alley — Paul
Goldin, who always manages a
200 game, (and a couple of 100 s)
nabbed a 203 . . . And the Holey
Roller, Howard Aronin, holed
out a 201 single, plus two lu-lues,
which I can’t mention (we made
a deal and he figures my in
come taxes, and I clam up on his
no-hitters—I can’t make a living
writing this column for nohing,
you know!) . . And I’m sure the
only reason that you aren’t read
ing about Hank Clayman throw
ing a big series is because he was
in Kansas City—he likes to take
a short drive when he eats out
what a sport!

Another holiday for the small
fry, but just want to let Bruce
(The Bruiser) Browdy know that
I finally learned to spell his
name right—it’s BroUdy—O K ?
(His.daddy is a pretty big guy -
and I ain’t no match for either
one of them!)
AJCC Women’s League
The girls decided that after
the New Years’ celebration their
hair-dos might be in a mess, so
they had better cancel out for
Monday nite’s bowling. And be
sides, it’s hard to see that little
bitty head pin with bloodshot
eyes—OK, class excused!
That’s the tenth round — see
you at Donald’s next week!
