Moslem-Kuropean Fighting
PARIS (JTA) — Police crack
ed down in Oran this week with
a second curfew in 48 hours as
Jews and Moslems clashed for
the second successive day. Vio
lence against Jews spread to
Constantine where Charles Cohen
was shot and killed. Cohen’s
killers were believed to be ter
rorists of the FLN Moslem un
derground rebel organization.
Authorities reported six per

To School in Israel
TEL AVIV (JTA)—The Ameri
can flag which flew over the
White House in Washington dur
ing the presidency of the late
Frankhn D. Roosevelt was pre
sented at ceremonies at Beisan
today to the local High. School,
which is named after FDR. The
flag and a portrait of Mr. Roose
velt was given to the school by
US. Ambassador Walworth Bar-
hour, at a ebremony attended by
all members ofthe school’s facul
ty and student body.
Congressman William S. Moor
head, of Pennsylvania, visited
the school a month ago, and was
asked whether he could provide
the school with a flag associated
with the late President Roosevelt.
Upon his return to Washington,
Mr. Moorhead obtained the flag
that flew over the White House
during the Roosevelt years, and
sent it to the United States Em

in Oran took a prominent part in
the European demonstrations
against independence for Algeria
and took revenge for the killing
of a Jewish shoemaker by lynch

dependent Algeria but they did
not indicate how many were
Jews. Throughout the day groups
of Moslems and Jews marched
through Oran shouting opposing
slogans and colliding in savage
battles.
The renewal of Moslem-Jewish
strife was sparked by terrorist
attacks of the FLN against two
Jews on the outskirts of the Jew
ish section.
More complete reports con
firmed that some of the most
savage Moslem attacks took place
in Oran’s Jewish quarter where
at least five Jews were killed. A
Moslem terrorist group opened
fire on housewives hurrying to
complete their shopping. Three
Jews, one of them a pregnant
woman, were killed. The wom
an’s death apparently infuriated
the younger Jews in Oran and
they swarmed out seeking re

Private Schools for (iirls
Practice Anti-Jewish Bias
LONDON (JTA) — Britain’s
so-called “public” schools for
girls, which are the equivalent of
private schools in the United
States, discriminate against Jew
ish students, it was found here
this week, in a study conducted
for the London Evening Stand
ard The same writer made a
study of bias in “public” schools
for boys, last year, finding that
the results “did not show up our
tradition of educational tolerance
in a very favorable light.”
At the Sherborne School for
Girls, in Dorset, the writer found
an attitude “uncompromising, to
say the least, on the matter.” He
quoted the headmistress of the
school as asserting: "Every girl
who comes here must take part
in our religious program. We can
not accept girls who are unable
to take part in our services, and
there are no facilities here where
by a practicing Jew can worship
on her own.”
While many Jewish parents,
states the writer, complain that
they find it difficult to get their
girls into local public school, the
two Francis Holland schools in
London “operate a vigorous quota
of 10 percent of Jewish pupils.”
