BUENOS AIRES, (JTA) —
While anti-semitic actions in this
country have decreased in inten
sity in recent months, “rightist
tendencies” in public opinion
have become more apparent, Dr
Isaac Goldenberg, president of
DAIA, central organization of
Argentine Jewry, said here this
week.
Reviewing DAIA activities in
1961, Dr. Goldenberg said at a
press conference that small but
strongly organized neo-Nazi or
ganizations are behind the right
ist tendencies evident in Argen
tina He declared there has been
an increase in the distribution in
Argentina of “gross” anti-Sem
itic literature, imported from
Mexico.
Dr. Goldenberg also deplored
the spread of the so-called “free
education” movement in ttys
country’s public schools. Many
public schools, he said, are pass
ing from Federal governmental
jurisdiction, under the label of
“free education” into the hands
of provincial governments which
permit the introduction of Cath
olic, religious education into the
public schools.
To help offset the rightist ten
dencies, Dr Goldenberg announ
ced the establishment of a Juan
D. Alberdi Prize to be awarded
to^Jhe person in Argentina who
has performed outstanding work
in the field of increasing Jewish-
Christian understanding. Alberdi
was a noted 19th Century Argen
tinian identified with the spread
of democratic principles here.
Approve Distribution
Of Bibles in Schools
At Tulsa, California
LOS ANGELES, Calif, (JTA)
-—Trustees of the Union High
School district in the town of
Tulsa, Calif, about 100 miles
north of here, approved the dis
tribution of Gideon Bibles in
public school assemblies twice
each year, in spite of objections
which had been raised by the
School Council.
The American Jewish Congress,
the Anti-Defamation League of
B’nai B’rith . and the American
Civil Liberties Union are inves
tigating the matter. Last year the
Board of Trustees of Turlock,
Calif., southeast of San Francis
co, discontinued similar distribu
tion of Gideon Bibles in that
town’s schools after the Ameri
can Jewish Congress protested to
the California Attorney General
FLOODS, HEAVY
RAIN IN ISRAEL
TEL AVIV, (JTA) — Large
sections of Israel were hit this
week by floods resulting from
almost 48 hours of continuous
rains, causing road damages es
timated at at least a half-million
pounds (280,000) stranding auto
mobiles, disrupting working
hours, and flooding many homes
and public institutions.
Telephone service was inter
rupted by floods between Tel
Aviv and Jerusalem, and in
other areas of the country. Many
streets in (his city were flooded
by raging streams.
Much interest is being display
ed each month and larger audi
ences are noticed in the “Sing
Along” programs as they are
presented at SFC. Albert Zatlin
took the singing members
through their paces on Thurs
day,/Jan. 18, in fine style, and
found many of the individual
members very co-operative in
helping to lead the singing of
songs of their own choosing.
“The Sing Along” program is
keeping pace with the require
ments of this type of program.
The new No. 4 “Sing Along”
selections of 40 songs printed for
easy reading will be heard on
February Program and has been
scheduled in for Thursday, Feb.
15, when the English songs will
be led by Albert Zatlin and
Harry Goldberg, and the Jewish
"sing along” will be guided by
Oscar Biefeld Both programs
will be guided by Oscar Biefeld.
Both programs will be dove
tailed for experimental purposes
in order to work out a united
program.
Bernard Liebowitz will ap
pear on the program slated for
Monday, Jan. 22, on a subject
that is timely. Mr. Liebowitz Is
the executive director of the
Jewish Community Council and
his talk will be of an intimate
nature on the building of a solid
Jewish Community project in
the St. Petersburg area.
It appears from this vantage
point that there will be “SRO”
at the second performance of
“Good Old Vaudeville Days,”
which will be presented on
Tuesday, Matinee, Jan. 23, in the
auditorium of the Jewish Com
munity Center. In the cast will
be Art Hilliar, Ada Marx, Helen
Birkhahn, Harry Rose, Ethel
Green, Frances Monro, Jessie

Billie Brady, Grace Fortin, Harry
Goldberg. The growing orchestra

Birkhahn, Harry Rose, Richard
Carlin and Louis Daum. The
entire show will later appear on
a program for the Police Ath
letic League for a drive to build
a home for “Unwanted Children.”
Jennie Giniger couldn't forget
the Sunshine City. A few months
ago she departed for Miami, say
ing she was going to live there
permanently. This week she is
back in St. Pete and dancing to
the sweet strains of fine music
on the floor of the Jewish Com
munity Center. Somehow or
other those good old friendships
she made in SFC were too pow
erful so she is going to live
among us for keeps this time.
Welcome home, Jennie.
Mollie Brandt, chairman of
the projects committee, or SFC
is back from Chicago and eager
to get started on her activities.
When Mollie tackles a job it will
be accomplished and so we are
looking forward to several new

of our members.

about" party is shaping up. A
special Birthday Cake will go
into the oven 24 hours before the
party. Entertainment that is dif
ferent will be offered and there
will be the newest of dance rec
ords. Manny Ward is holding
special Cha Cha Classes and
Nancy Rubin is busying herself
along with the new Jewish
“snake along” dance that she is
so well known for. All in all,
everyone Is in for a good time.

ful results from the surgical
operation on his arm and has
been greatly relieved of the con
stant pain that he used to suffer,
following an accident he had in
New Jersey last summer. The
faces of both Ben and Ethel show
the release from strain for they
both feel so greatly relieved at
the successful outcome of the
operation.
