A former New York dentist and PROJECT HOPE joined forces re cently to wage another battle in America’s war against disease throughout the world. Dr. Robert Isaac Schattner, sci entific director of the Chloraseptic Company, donated a substantial quantity of his discovery Chlora septic, to the HOPE SHIP The ship will leave soon to bring free medical care "to the under privileged areas of South Amer ica. Chloraseptic was discovered by Dr. Schattner after years of re search—much'of it performed after h'is office hours as a practicing den tist in Bayside, New York. It is designed to relieve pain connected with various throat and gum in fections. Also highly antiseptic, it has been proven nearly twice as effective as iodine when used orally according to a recent study at children’s hos pital. Thirty-six year old Dr. Schatt ner is a graduate of the College of the City of New York and the University of Pennsylvania Dental School. His parents Frieda and Is idore Schattner immigrated to America from Soltowinner in Cen tral Europe. After completing his training, Dr. Schattner worked with the U.S. Public Health Service before entering private practice. A chance remark at a cocktail party started him on his search which ultimately produced Chlor aseptic. One of the guests at the party complained that she had a tooth pulled that morning and she still suffered some pain. His studies had equipped him with knowledge explaining why ex isting pain killers were not satis factory. They were either in the narcotics family or contained “caines” which were capable of causing sensitivities. With the zeal of a young Pas teur, Dr. Schattner in 1952 em barked on a series of experiments to find a true pain killer which was not habit forming or toxic. By a process of elimination, Dr. Schattner went to the phenol fam ily for its antiseptic qualities. Orig inally used by Joseph Lister, phenol was an accepted germ killer. But it was also acid and couldn't be used in the mouth or throat. After patient hours of work, he finally came up with a solution which put phenol into a safe alka line range. As a matter of fact, his discovery was found so safe that it could be swallowed with out unpleasant results. So Dr. Schattner now had pro duced an effective germ killer which, for the first time, was also an effective pain killer. But what was he to do witlf it. After receiving many favorable comments from the medical and dental professions, Dr. Schattner offered his discovery to the large 8 pharmaceutical companies. They were impressed with his discovery but they felt reluctant backing a one man discovery. Feeling that he had made a dis covery to benefit mankind, the problem now was getting Chlor aseptic to the people who needed relief from pain. An associate eventually took over his dental practice. He then became a dental consultant to sev eral New York insurance com panies. This position was less time consuming. He arranged for numerous clin ical studies at several medical schools and hospitals to test his product, after the formula and label had been submitted to the U. S. Food and Drug Administra tion. In the meantime, he bottled sam ples which he personally distribut ed to dentists and physicians on Long Island. All samples contained a reply card inviting comment. To date endorsements of the new prep aration throughout the United States total: dentists 21,905 . . . physicians 18,480. Sprayed into the throat or used as a gargle, Chlor aseptic relieves soreness within 15 seconds to three minutes after ap- plicition. This relief lasts two or three hours. It also had astonishing success as a destroyer of bacteria in the medical school studies. Before medical school clinics, hospitals and government institu tions satisfactorily completed their tests of the new discovery, Dr. Schattner risked bankruptcy twice, engaged in constant financial strug gles in the production of his prod uct. Test results gave Chloraseptic a wide open field for relieving ail ments ranging from sore gums after tooth extraction to sore throat pain accompanying acute tonsilitis, oro- pharyngitis and laryngitis. A non-prescription drug, this antiseptic and anesthetic mouth wash can now be bought at drug stores. Comparatively few Amer icans have heard of Chloraseptic ... beyond those whose dentist or phy sician recommended it . . . since it is advertised only in scientific journals and literature for the medical professions. But news about a pain killer available to the masses of people cannot be kept quiet for long. Major newspapers as well as pro fessional journals throughout the country have heralded the dusci- vert as an important medical ad vance . . . and Dr. Schattner’s en terprise has grown into a com pany valued today at over S3 mil lion! Everyone has a desire to ease the pains of suffering humanity, and for Dr. Schattnqp that desire has been fulfilled. Dedicated tireless ly to the task he set himslf ... in the tradition of history's noblest scientific mind . . . the 36-year-old American has earned the title of ‘modern pioneer against pain.” project HOPE Humanity vs. Disease Dr. Schattner is a young Jewish scientist who has made a number of important discoveries since he gave up his dental practice to devote his life to research.
