LADIES' and MEN'S HATS
Encouraging Their
Children to Travel
"Once only the sens and daugh
ters of a few fortunate families
made the Grand Tour of Europe.
They were the famed ‘Innocents
Abroad' who learned a lot about
other peoples’ ways of life and
wrote books for their fellow
Americans who had to stay at
home.
“Today thousands upon thou
sands of parents want their own
children to see America and Eur
ope as part of their continuing
education, and they plan as
carefully for it as for col
lege. Students in great and grow
ing numbers are enriched by
travel before they begin their
careers and maried life.”
This, according to Irvin Frankel
and Larry Goldberg of the Travel
Mart in Atlanta.
They represent the Arista
Student Travel Association, pio
neer and leader in the field of
supervised group travel for
younger people. An extensive
European program has been de
veloped. and groups ‘ are now
. being organized lor 1963 tours,
they have announced. Early ap
plication is advised.
Every student’s "educational
holiday” includes the essential
basic tour of Europe’s highlights
Paris, Rome, London and other
cities, and their theatre, opera,
festivals and sights. In addition,
each student can choose from a
wide selection of special features
such as Greece, Israel, Scandina
via or Russia to satisfy individual
interests.
The secret of acquiring WEALTH is to SAVE
and INVEST . . . WISELY, (’all me and let mo

Report Young
US Jews Low in
Jewish Knowledge
WASHINGTON (JTA ) Des
pite evidence of more natural
identification with Judaism than
their parents, the Jewish know
ledge level of the current gen
eration of committed young
American Jews "is not more sub
stantial than that of the uncom
mitted,” Dr. Max F Baer, national
director of the B’nai B’rith Youth
Organization, told the annual
meeting here of the organization’s
youth commission a national
adult policy-making body com
posed of 50 members.
Dr Baer ascribed this failure
to a combination of lack of di
rection in home, plus some seri
ous shortcoming^ in formal Jew
ish education “The concept of
Jewish values being hanfled
down from father to son today
has become a case of the blind
leading the blind," he said. “When
father himself is unlearned or
confused, there is not much of
Judaism son can learn The sit
uation becomes further aggra
vated when father's behavior is
inconsistent with Jewish values.
“The serious void in education
of American Jewish youth,” said
Dr. Baer, “can be closed by vol
unteer youth agencies. As part
of an overall plan to augment
Jewish education of teenagers,
youth groups should establish
series of informal courses in co
operation w’ith locai public school
authorities,” he suggested. “While
it is not the function of most
youth groups to schedule formal
instruction in Jewish values,
they have abundant opportun
ities for supplementary learning
in a variety of informal group
settings because of the large num
bers of youth with whom they
deal—numbers far greater than
are reached by religious schools,”
he declared

Portland Federation
Plans Unit to Study
Local Jewish Needs
PORTLAND, Ore, (JTA)—A
Social Planning Committee has
been authorized by the Portland
Jewish Federation to study Jew
ish life in the city in its totality,
and to recommend areas of ac
tivity requiring action for im
provement.
A committee of 11 to 15 mem
bers will be named. One objec
tive will he to prevent waste and
duplication in the expenditure
of more than $250,000 annually
by local agencies, exclusive of
Portland synagogues.
The Federation indicated that
one of the principles behind the
planned study was that decisions
as to what will best serve the
interests of a community can bo
made either with planning or
haphazardly, but they must be
made; and that it is essential,
therefore, that they be made
wisely.
Israel Cabinet Nods
to Rothschild Offer
on TV Education
JERUSALEM (JTA — Against
the reported opposition of Prime
Minister David Bcn-Gurion, the
Cabinet, at its regular weekly
session here today, accepted the
offer of the Rothschild Trust to
finance an educational television
project in Israel. Abba Eban,
Minister of Education and Cul
ture, was instructed by the Gov
ernment to present the issue to
the Knesset, Parliament, later this
week
tinder the terms of the Cab
inet’s mandate, the educational
television project will be con
flicted experimentally for a per
iod ,of two to three years, during
which the Ministry of Education
will have exclusive jurisdiction
over programming and instruc
tion to be transmitted by TV The
construction and maintenance
costs will be borne by the Roths
child Trust.
After two to thiee years, the
Government is to reconsider the
entire issue. If, by (hat time, it
is decided to continue education-
al-TV broadcasting here, the
television setup will become part
of the Government’s responsibil
ity, similar to the Government
ownership of the present radio
and postal services.
The project is expected to have
tough opposition when it comes
before the Knesset. However, in
view of the collective responsi
bility rule in the Government,
which prohibits members of the
coalition from opposing a Gov
ernment motion supported by a
Cabinet majority, the project is
expected to receive parliamen
tary approval

Rockwell Link
BOSTON (JTA) — Spokesmen
for the John Birch Society re
portedly disassociated themselves
here from a Boston backer of
George Lincoln Rockwell’s Amer
ican Nazi Party, who had plann
ed to open a “Joe McCarthy”
bookshop here. The John Birch
leaders took action against the
bookshop plan after “amazement”
over the reported tie-in with
Rockwell had been expressed in
a statement by the Jewish Com

Anti-Defamation League.
The bookshop plan had been
announced by Speros Lagoulis,
identified by the Boston Herald
as an associate of Rockwell who,
in 1961, was fined $25 here for
helping Rockwell register at a
Boston hotel under a false name
Lagoulis had been a “coordinator”
for the John Bir :h Society. His
Birch membership has since, been
revoked, according to a report
here.
