THE SOUTHERN ISRAELITE

Hits - Splits
Bowling Bits
by EDDIE SILVERBOARD
AJCC Mens’ league
Although Arnold Hoffman was
top man of the week with a clean
sweeping 223-603 series, probably
the most outstanding ne.vs was
the game thrown by Harry (The
Warden) Gordon—that nickname
was given him when he was a
popular Sunday School teacher -
anyway, Harry took over for his
team and handled his bowling
ball the way his pupils used to
throw spitballs and slammed out
a big 192 single Now you may
think that ain’t so hot, but you
evidently never saw Harry in
action — that game is for him
about the same as a 99-yard run
in football or a no-hit game in

baseball, only the odds are a bit
b-gger. The only real comparison
would be if he could roll a 193

Paul Goldin celebrated his- f
think - 17th wedding anniversary
(that sweet Linda Goldin is the
bride) by popping the cork to a
sparkling 206-600 series, and .1 1

teen more years before he does
that good again The Jimmy
Hoffa of Bowling, Hank dayman,
had a fair mte with a 206-f>84 set
. . On the other hand, Dave Eis-
enberg had a great nite with a
205-573 set—it’s the first time
he’s been able to get the five pin
out of there without resorting to
an eviction notice For ‘he lit
tle man, Jerry Ellison powered
out a 205-573 set, and yours truly-
powdered out a 204-572 set (al
right, who’s the wise guy who
put that extra "d” in powered—
my gosh, Adolph, do you have
to do ALL the work?) . .
In high singles Irving Wein
berg came up with a 212, Ken
Kror.ick (sounds like a movie
star’s name, doesn’t it—or a nick
name for Paul Sifen—Kid Chron
ic) blasted out a 211 cure-all .
Two of the guys with the smooth
est deliveries in the league.
Marsh Nerenbaum (in bowling)
and Murray Gordon (in deliver
ing film came out strong with
212 each . The two Wonders

Mr. and Mrs. League
In a hectic battle for the first
hall championship, two heroes
emerged Sunday n:tc to asiound
the bowling world Diane Silver-
board (I know fieri) anti Harold
(The Iceberg) Rosenberg . Di
ane, gambling on a new approach
(she drove up Lenox to Wildwood
instead ol straight out Cheshire
Bridge) outsmarted the odds-
makers and blasted out a bi„ 208- •
195-536 series for ner team’s vic
tory
And Harold Rosenberg, one of
the reputed kingpin of the policy
rackets, found the secret to bet
ter bowling by using two bobby-
pins to keep his eyebrows out of
his eyes and whacked out 3 175-
497 set, ending up with a four
bagger in the first game to beat
his rivals by three pins in 3 pres
sure-packed close one . Other
members of the top team are Dick
Born (he supplied the candy bars
to give them all that energy),
Shei'a Cohen (sht is their num
ber one cheerleader I, and Roz
Goldstein (she bowls just bad
enough to make the opposition
over-confident) . . .
In other action, Howard Aronin,
the husband of Shirley Aronin
(that’s the only way I can ever
get to mention hei name—now if
I wrote a column on cooking,
she’d have it made) was high on
the totem pole with a good ac
counting for himself with a 214-
592 set . . Aron Cohen, one of
the great picture bowlers of this
league (unfortunately, the p-cture
never developed) had a high sin
gle with a flashy 218 finish
Doris Orenstein, just on the verge
of giving it all up for golf (at
least you can be lousy in secrecy)
flipped a 182 single . . And
Pauline Manning, Grandmother of
the Year in Bowling, had some
thing to brag about besides her
off-spring with a bouncing 168
game Congrats, Morris!
AJCC Womens’ league
I olanned to let one of the kids
write this part, but the two oldest
had finals at Gradv (that’s w-hen
they dust the spider webs off
their books), and Kenny is in the
midst of a torrid love affair—he
“crayoned” his latest flame
(that’s the same as being "pinn
ed" only in kindergarten they
use their favorite color crayon),
so here we go with the scores:
Tops Monday nite was Raye Gal-
anti with a fine 130-529 set . . .
Next was a pretty 187-508 series
picked up by Hild;. Ncy now the
phone will be busy for an hour
while Meemo (Lillian Ncy calls
her darling daughter-in-law and
reads her the press notices .
I la Galanti kept up with the rest
of the family with a 483 count
Few good singles Jackie
Friedman got lucky with a 189;
Rita Klee got happy with a 188;
and Frances Saperstein got fran
tic with a 170 Most improved
bowler (for three games) was the
Blondt Eggshell of the Alleys
(I’m referr ing to your ball,
darling) Estelle Carl. who
scrambled a well-done 473 series.
How about that! Now il only
Robert Ripley were still alive . .
That's the tenth frame — see
you in the alleys next week
