Y iddish Film Festival
Offers Singing
The last film of the Yiddish
Film Festival, “The Singing
Blacksmith,” will be shown on
Sunday, Jan. 27 at 7:30 n. m. in
the AJCC Garson Auditorium.
The story is set in a Jewish
town in old Russia.
The lad, Yankel, born of par
ents too poor to pay for his edu-
caiton, is apprenticed to a roister
ing old blacksmith whose com
plaining wife makes their home
a warning against marriage. Some
years later Yankel now played by
the melodious Moishe Oysher,
has learned his lesson well. He
has taken over the smithy, avoid
ed marriage strenuously (“why
eat stale bread when I can get
fresh rolls”) and ht drinks mer-
Smilli*
rily as his former master.
This phase is succeded by the
true love that changes all things,
iriam Riselle joins Oysher in
love scenes which are truly writ
ten and excellently acted. Jewish
matchmakers supply comic relief.
Mr. Oysher sings and his voice
has such quality and power that
it is easy to enjoy the music and
acting. For authentic — Jewish
character taken from the source,
David Pinski’s play (“Yankel Der
Schmidt” or “The Singing Black
smith” is well worth seeing.
The picture will be introduced
by Dr. Joseph who will talk on
“Jewish Traditional Folk Music”
as related to “Hazannic Music.”
