(pronounced Mahn-ger, hard g),
without doubt the finest balladist
Yiddish poetry has ever produced,
a poet who was tremendously pop
ular wi.h the Yiddish-speaiung
masses in pre-war Poland. Manger,
a highly refined folk poet w hose
verse lends itself easily to music,
has since the war been continuing
on the literary path he had trod
den out for himself a generation
earlier. Though a refugee h'mself,
his writings seem not to have been
influenced by the holocaust. He
usually writes in the accents of
light-heartedness, often in the rol-
lickir^ happy-go-lucky mood of
the comic balladeer, though sadness
too can sometimes overtake him.
His travesties on biblical figures,
whom he presented in the guise
of latter-day Polish Jews, speaking
and acting as such, were by some
deemed sacriligous, though actual
ly his simplicity of imagery re
minds one of Negro spirituals.
Manger’s first book of prose, a col
lection of satiric tales, has just been
issued on the occasion of ’.’is six
tieth birthday.
New York with its two million
Jews is today the leading center
of Yiddish culture, as it has been
ever since the destruction of Jew
ish Warsaw, and all the five lead
ing Yiddish writers mentioned
above now reside in New York.
However, of late years Israel, more
particularly Tel Aviv, has also be
come an important center of Yid
dish writing. There a distinguished
poet, Abraham Sutzkever, has been
residing for a number of years.
Sutzkever fought the Nazis with
the Partisan groups in the Polish
forests. He has excelled in poetry
of the holocaust, but latterly his
residence in Israel has brought.
forth poems which extol the new
life in the young Jewish, State.
Such Israeli Yiddish writers as
Joshua Spiegel, Mendel Man and
A. M. Fuchs also portray the mir
acle of a resurrected Jewish living
on its own soil.
Thus the theme of the Third
Destruction while powerful is not
all-pervasive in contemporary
Yiddish letters. But it will take a
long time before Yiddish writers
will be able to forget the calamity
which had overtaken them as well
as their kin, will be able to forget
that they themselves were left
orphaned when the millions were
destroyed. The catastrophe, the loss
of the Yiddish-speaking masses of
Eastern Europe, is one of the main
reasons for the decline in the im
portance of Yiddish as a spoken,
written and read language among
Jews today — the other reasons
being the inevitable linguistic as
similation of Jews in the Western
world and the rise of Hebrew as
the national language of the State
of Israel. But meanwhile Yiddish
literature lets its voice be heard
and produces writers of great
talent whom the times have forced
to lament, though they are capable
of producing happier songs.
