Working Nights
Most members of the British
Trade Union Congress General
Council are Socialists, but some
of them have been knighted by
the Queen. Her consort, Prince
Philip, met with the General
Cotfncil one evening and, accord
ing to Victor Reisel, told them:
“It is good to see so many work
ing knights working nights.”
Little Rebels
When a white Charleston, S. C.,
family moved North, reports the
city’s News and Courier, the mo
ther was concerned about how her
children, accustomed to segregated
schools, would adjust to Negro
children in their classes. After
their first day at the new school,
the youngsters reported that they
had eaten lunch with Negro chil
dren. Surprised, the mother ask
ed why.
"Well,” they protested, "you
didn’t think we’d eat with those
Yankees!”
Moon Over Mississippi
Believe it or not, one of the
casualties of the segregationist
riots against Negro student James
Meredith at Ole Miss was the
state’s tax on bootleg liquor. Mis
sissippi is the only “dry” state in
the country. Its citizens consis
tently' vote to keep it dry. But
they drink wet—and being "real
istic,” the state £o\ ■eminent long
ago levied a 10 per cent tax on
sales of bootleg whiskey.
When Federal check-points
were established on all highways
around Oxford, Miss., in connec
tion with the rioting at the Uni
versity, bootleggers decided to
lay low lest Federal agents search
their trunks and find liquor on
which no Federal taxes had been
paid. It Is now reported that the
state of Mississippi is asking the
Federal government to reimburse
the state treasury for $1,200 in
bootleg taxes that would have
been collected If there had been
no period of Federal supervision
in Mississippi.
