The Ben J. Massell Dental Clinic / New Massell Dental Clinic on Seventh Street For forty years, the Morris Hirsch Clinic had operated at the old Educational Alliance on Capital Avenue, serving the medical requirements of the needy in that area. When it was apparent the old JEA building would be torn down and with it the Morris Hirsch Clinic, a survey was conducted by the Federa tion for Jewish Social Serv ices to see whether need still existed for such volunteer medical service. The study showed that there were still distinct areas for augmenting the facilities offered by the Scene at the dedication of the first Ben Massell Dental Clinic city at Grady Hospital—parti cularly in the field of dentis try. Because of his interest in the health and welfare of the com munity, Mr. Massell agreed to underwrite the cost of a clinic structure on Pryor Street. In recognition of his concern, the new facility was named in his honor. The picture below was made when the Massell Dental Clinic first opened its doors, showing the modem dental equipment available for treat ment of hundreds of children and adults during the next few years. But the Pryor Street loca tion was to have short lived utility. The area was soon pre empted by city authorities as a part of the expressway sys tem. With funds realized by the sale of the property to the city, a structure was acquired at 18 Seventh Street (upper right). Ideally suited for a dental clinic, it had in fact been de signed and constructed for the use of two dentists who had since decided to move into different quarters. It was later brought to light that Mr. Mas sell had sold the original lot of the Seventh Street property to the dentists twelve years previously. Today, the clinic, whose op eration expenses are supported by the Community Chest, serves a busy procession of school children and adults, on a non-s e c t a r i a n, interracial basis. The professional services are provided by a volunteer staff of some thirty dentists. Thf Southern Israelite ' 20
