By BEN NATHAN
(Here again la an unusual con
tribution by the anonymous
young American poet who has
been contributing to our pages
under the pen-name Ben Nath
an.)
The basis lor the Exodus is
characterized as essentially nat
ural In impetus.
The motivations urging the es
cape of the prisoner-slave are
held self-evident. The root* of
such motivations are held as re
quiring no special depths of soil.
The prerogative of the victim
to undo or evade his warden at
any opportunity is held as natur
al as the prerogative of weather
to shift or change. Also largely
natural is the response to the of
fering of “milk and honey” in
replacement for "lime and
straw.” The willingness of a man
to exchange a potato for a pearl
has not—at least to this writer’s
knowledge — ever met with any
serious analysis. It is assumed ap
parently that the exchange of
things poor for things precious is
as inherent a response as the
response to exchange conditions
of pain for conditions either
promissory of relief or even
pleasure.
In short, the legitimacy of
evading grief and choosing the
better as against the bad are be
haviorisms no serious student of
the psychological disciplines has
yet marked as subject to ques
tion.
The Exodus, then, enjoys no
debatable esoteric Impetus. A
beaten man simply removes him
self from the province of the
beater.
But the naturalism that char
acterizes that exodus soon evap
orates, particularly in moments
of panic, when the suspicion
holding slavery as preferable to
death is given immediate, or at
least temporary ground. At the
moment the blade descends no
one answers the questions of the
equally natural suspicion of the
amputee as to the preferability
of the risk of death by infection
as against the risk of death by
surgery.
That suspicion is likewise held
comprehensible or natural. But
once the self-protecting or self-
aggrandizing or self-assuring na
tural instincts are consummated
in the flaunting crudity of the
CALF incident, a turn Is taken.
Henceforth Moses stands in ut
ter contrariety to the assertion of
natural response. The unprofound
common-clay response to evasion
from slavery and the like com
mon-clay willingness to barter
“milk and honey” for “lime and
straw” is held suddenly no longer
adequate. That response, quite
obviously, confers no special
merit upon the responder. In
short, at a certain point the na
tural character of the Exodus
loses Its pertinency; it was
enough, but enough no longer.
In fact, demanded now Is s re
versal of motivations purely na
tural. Moses demands that the
yoke of Egyptian enslavement be
willingly substituted for another
yoke, the yoke of another Law.
The Insistence of the Buddah
that the Yoke of Liberation can
only be won and worn by those
who concur to its substitution for
that former yoke, the yoke of
possession and worldly preoccu
pation, Is not unlike the Insistence
of Moses that the convenant of
bondage can be assumed only
when the cube of emptiness that
centers the Ark be held in sol
emn dlstlngulahment from the
beaten gold and precious treasure
Exodus

century leaders of political rev
olution have made and still make
upon their devotees enjoys like
parallel. Apparently an old yoke
can only be successfully discard
ed by the willingness to replace
it, at all costs, by another, Indeed
heavier one.
It is to be observed that the
heavier one, the replacement, Is
invariably more abstract In char
acter. The Impetus to strike down
an Egyptian overseer does not
obviously derive from the same
natural sources of concern as does
storaged In the sanctums of the the Impetus to ascend a mountain
pyramid. The demand that 20th and bring down A LAW
