Hebrew Dance Workshop
At Blue Star June 16-23
For the third summer this
June (16 to 23), folk dancers
from all over the country will as
semble In the Blue Ridge Moun-
taims to participate in the week-
long Fred Berk’s Israeli Folk
Dance Workshop to be held at
Blue Star Camps, Henderville,
N. C.
“We invite anyone interested
to attend,” Mr. Berk explained
when making the announcement.
“If you have an interest in folk
dancing, regardless of race or re
ligion, and have a desire to learn
and a willingness to live with a
groap in a camp setting, you’re
welcomed. No formal training or
background is needed. Emphasis
will be placed on how to teach
f«tk dancing to groups, but
everyone is invited.
This season, Berk plans to have
a musician and an assistant to
work with him and to add to the
program of study which will in
clude learning dances, how to
teach, and choreography.
The workshop director teaches
at the Jewish Theological Sem
inary in New York and directs
the Jewish Dance Department at
the 92nd Street YM-YWHA. He
is also dance consultant of the
American Zionist Youth Council.
He has directed the annual Folk
Dance Festival of the Council
held in New York City for the
past twelve years. Fred choreo
graphs for his own company, the
Hebraica Dancers, and produces
programs based on Jewish themes
for television, concerts and vari
ous assemblies. He is the author
of several books on Jewish and

The workshop will take place
at Blue Star Camps, Henderson
ville, N. C., co-founded and co
directed by Herman and Harry
Popkin who are co-sponsors with
Fred Berk of the week-long dance
training conclave.
Dance sessions will be inter
spersed with relaxing hours of
boating, canoeing, swimming,
tennis, hiking, and other activities
associated with camp life, a
spokesman said.
Camp Blue Star observes its
sixteenth season this summer. A
complete and modern private co
educational camp, it is located
seven miles from Hendersonville,
N. C. Some seventy-five perman
ent camp buildings, designed es
pecially for camp use, are located
on the 450-acre private estate
with a private lake. Each cabin
has a bothroom toilet, shower,
sink and hot water. Folk dance
participants will be housed in
these modern cabins and will
make use of many recreational
facilities and activities conducted
at the Camp.
At the Camp during the dates
of the workshop will be a pre-
camp two-week session for
younger children where the Folk
Dance Workshop participants will
be able to “practice teach” dances
and methods learned at the
workshop. (Also using one of the
Blue Star Camps for a two-week
period overlapping the workshop,
will be the Mount Pinnacle Dance
Camp which is observing its
fourth season as a camp for stu
dents and teachers of dance to
study, live and work with lead
ing figures and personalties in
the world of dance, offering a
concentrated dance course with
instruction in ballet, modern jazz,
character and music appreciation.
