Activities of Atlanta's
JEWISH HOME
The Annual Purim Ball at the
Jewish Home held on March 11,
was again one of the outstanding
affairs of the year. With over 35
residents in costume, the judges
had a difficult time selecting the
winners. Those who were chosen
as having the most beautiful cos
tumes were: first, Rebie Gordon,
who came as a Spanish servorita
in a gorgeous blue gown; second,
Anna Crude, a gypsy with bells
on; and third, Rose Linguvic,
dressed in flaming red. Prize
winners for the most original
costumes were Isabelle Kramer,
who was an Egyptian princess;
and Esther Epstein, who wore a
most colorful peasant gown. Four
of the five prize winners made
their own costumes. The men who
won prizes were Willie Boorstein
and Harry Beerman, who were
dressed as Spanish dons.
A number of volunteers and
staff also came in costume. Rose
Liebling, whose wonderful hat
was the talk of the Ball, won the
prize for the volunteer with the
best costume. Estelle Carden,
household supervisor, came as a
Southern belle, and won the
prize for the best staff costume.
The judges were Arlene Frohsin,
Belle Rosenfeld and Dr. Louis
Berger.
Entertainment was provided by
Mrs. Elsie Shmerling at the piano
and Mrs. Anna Dodd, who con
tributed several Hebrew piano
selections. Movies were again
taken by ace cameraman, Jack
Butler, assisted by Sonny Good
man. The residents enjoyed see
ing themselves in the movies,
which were in color. Philip
Shafferman directed the making
of the refreshments. Thanks are
due to all the volunteers who
contributed to the success of the
Purim Ball. Gertrude Schiffman,
recreational supervisor, was re
sponsible for the preparation of
he costumes and the decorations.
In addition to the residents,
there was a large crowd of rela
tives and friends of the Home.
Louis Newmark, executive di
rector of the Jewish Home, was
elected president of the Georgia
Conference on Social Welfare at
the closing session of the 36th
Annual Meeting of the Confer
ence. Mr. Newmark will succeed
Mrs. Virginia Smyth, who did
much to revitalize the program
of the Conference and was large
ly responsible for the fine An
nual Meeting, which was attend
ed by 900 participants from all
over the state. At the closing
session Mrs. Bruce Schaefer, the
new director of the State Depart
ment of Public Welfare, gave an
inspiring talk on the social wel
fare outlook in Georgia, particu
larly in relation to youth serv
ices. Miss Esther Belsinger, presi
dent of the Residents’ Council,
