THI SOUTHKBN I8BAELITK
Israel Continues as Land of Miracles
By DAVID HOROWITZ
(WUP Special From Israel)
TEL AVIV, (WUP) — Israel
continues to be a land of mira
cles. There seems to be no end
to growth and development.
But the greatest wonder of the
miracle that is Israel is the fact
that the Israelis—preoccupied as
they are with their daily con-
structive tasks—give little
thought or attention to what is
happening on the borders. Al
though surrounded by hostile
neighbors in a “narrow” terri
tory, they feel as free and cer
tainly as independent — even
more so — than the average
American. And this is one of
the most wonderful aspects to
life here. People abroard worry
more about the Arabs. The Is
raelis feel very secure under the
state’s current unparalleled de
fence system.
And the children — Oh what
children!—they are something to
behold indeed. A strange and
marvelous spirit of futurity
seems to imbue all of them. How
different from their parents still
bearing the marks of Hitler’s
tyranny! But the parents, too,
are proud and happy in the new
life. The country is transforming
them.
The Israeli Sabra is a happy
child, a beautiful, sturdy young
ster—full of song and joyous
anticipation. The Melting Pot
is working well in the ancient
land of Abraham, Isaac and
Jacob. A mighty generation is
emerging to the glory of all
Jewry.
Going through the width and
length of the land, this writer
found no delinquency, no beg
ging. Both the homes and the
schools are doing a good job.
A wholesome spirit pervades the
atmosphere wherever you go
and, despite the everyday life,
one feels a krdusha in the very
air you breathe. This is the dif
ference between Israel and any
other country in the world. It is
the Holy Land. There’s no get
ting away from it.
Your correspondent first visit
ed the old Palestine in 1924,
through 1927 when malaria took
a heavy toll of lives, when the
British overlords had shut their
eyes to the periodic murderous
Arab riots. Yet the pioneers
then courageously met the chal
lenge permitting nothing to dis
turb their holy efforts. A similar
situation existed in 1932 during
a second visit which extended
through 1934. Following seven
teen years, the writer made his
third visit in 1951. A reborn
Israel was celebrating its third
anniversary. A fourth visit in
1953 and a fifth in 1955.
And now, after eight years—
following an unusually smooth
and an almost record-breaking
flight from Idlewild to home on
the famous Pan Am jet clipper
and then a shuttle ride from the
ruins of Titus’ past glory on an
Alitalia jet to Lydda (El A1 was
still on strike)—your corre
spondent’s eyas could hardly be
lieve what they beheld as the
jet approached the shoreline of
Israel. The millions of lights
illuminating greater Tel Aviv
were breathtaking. The scene
was a far cry from the sandy
township of 1924 which prided
itself in its two main streets,
AUenby and Herzl. Not to ex
aggerate, it was almost like fly
ing over New York. All the
gaps between Tel Aviv and
Ramat Gan, Bat Yam, etc. had
been closed with beautiful resi
dential areas and the movement
of expansion goes on apace as
Petah Tikvah, Rishon Lezyion,
Rehovoth and the other nearby
townships become mere suburbs
of the most intriguing and fas
cinating cities in the world-—-
the Hill of Spring.
What is happening in Tel
Aviv is also oocuring in Jeru
salem which is expanding jn all
directions. Modern buildings are
rising everywhere on the rocky
mountainsides. In the vicinity of
the grandeur of the Hebrew
University campus numerous
government structures have
risen and a new Knesset is be
ing completed. Thus Jerusalem
is fast becoming the capital that
might well become the envy of
Washington and Paris. Haifa is
no exception, there, too, expan
sion is the order of the day.
But, as this writer see it, the
Negev offers the greatest hope
for the future. Ben-Gurion is
absolutely right. It is a Califor-
nia-Arizona area combined.
Beershba of Abraham renown is
spreading in all directions, and
Ashkelon and Ashdod of Phili
stine fame are back on the He
braic map. And Eilat, Israel’s
Miami, is developing into a fine
seaport as in the days of Solo
mon. Ships from Africa, India
and other world centers can be
seen each day coming and going.
What a land—Israel! It is a
land of hope and joy! A land of
the great homecoming! A land
of true promise and fulfillment!
It is fast becoming a land justi
fying the prophets’ vision which
foresaw it as an example to all
humanity for peace and concord
Zion stands redeemed!
