THE SOUTHERN ISRAELITE
Senior ^riendshijj V)eiv3
By HARRY ROSE
St. Petersburg HORIZONS Tampa
At the regular and special
meetings of the SF Club two im
portant pending matters were
acted upon. In the March mem
bership meeting the nominating
committee recommended to the
body membership that the entire
executive board be drafted for
the new term of 1963-1964 and
at this meeting no opposition
slates were proposed.
On April 1st, at the regular
body meeting the entire execu
tive board was elected unanim
ously. Those re.ained in office
are Harry Frank Rose, president;
Harry Kaplow, first vice presi
dent; Nancy Rubin, second vice
president; Emanuel Ward, treas
urer; Ruth Rose, recording sec
retary; Alma Mardenfeld and
Henrietta Tirk, financial secre
taries; Louis H. Shapiro, social
and corresponding secretary.
The new officers will be in
stalled at the oody meeting on
May 6, with Mrs. David Polman,
president of the National Council
of Jewish Women, as installation
officer. Another very important
action was taken by the body was
the raising of the annual dues of
the SF Club to 310 per married
copies and $5 for single mem
berships. While this action was
hotly debated It was carried by
a 95% vote of the membership.
The new dues will go into effect
with the 1963-1964 season open
ing on October 1.
Among the new members reg
istered are Bertha Diamond, Ida
Bernstein, David Kekoff, Irwin
and Gertrude Levitt, George P.
Meyer, Maurice l-eavitt, Samuel
and Fannie Spiegel. The latter
couple carry the first new mem
bership for the new 1963-1964
season.
/ft the meeting of Thursday,
April 11, Ethel Green and Fran
ces Monroe, of the SF enter
tainment staff, with Ida Marx of
ficiating at the piano, presented
an hour long sing, acting as a
combo that really registered with
the audience. These two artists
never fail to win the plaudits of
the new membership, whether
working as singles or as a com
bination and the song routine
was well done (being the work
of Ada Marx).
A very dear friend of Lillian
Barlow, celebrating her 83rd
birthday this week, wrote the
following beautiful poem, entitled
"The Making of Friends”:
If nobody smiled and nobody
cheered
And nobody helped ns along,
If each, every minute looked
after herself
And the good things all went
to the strong.
If nobody cared just a little
for yon.
And nobody thought about me
And we stood all alone In the
battle of Ufe,
What a dreary old world this
would be.
Lifo la sweet Juat because of
friends we have made.
And the things which In common
we share,
And the things which kn common
we share,
We want to live on. not because
of ourselves
But because of Ihe people
who care;
It’s giving and doing for
somebody else—
On that all life’s splendor
depends,
And the joy of the world
When It’s all added up,
Is found in the making of
friends.
