Plight Trouble at Singapore
Travelling Isn’t always fun, as this prominent Atlanta
Insurance man writes for our readers. Mr. Rittenbaum is
a member of The Southern Israelite Board.—The Editor
By BERRY RITTENBAUM
When I arrived at Singapore ways.
from Saigon I had a seven hour
layover before my flight was to
leave for Indonesia. When I ar
rived, I asked the Pan Ameri
can flight attendant if there was
any other flight to Djakarya. He
checked and there was not. In
most airports when you are a
transient you are kept in quar
antine but not in Singapore.
You must go through customs
immigration and sit in the wait
ing room. I had the Pan Ameri
can attendant have the coolie
take my bag to Thai Airlines,
my carrier to Djakarya. We
checked them with an attend
ant who represented Thai air-
I then went to the lounge to
wait out the long hours be
fore departing. I had been three
days with a stomach upset with
diarreah, and with the humid
heat I was not feeling my best.
It took me three hours to re
write the story about Saigon
and was really exhausted.
About 3:30 p.m. trucks and
fancy floats arrived to welcome
the Prime Minister of Malaysia
who had arrived from London.
There were bands, floats, fancy
costumes and firecrackers to
welcome him. He spoke on the
airport ramp from 4 p.m. to 7
p.m. His speeches were in three
languages, Malaysian, Chinese
and English.
About 7 p.m. I decided to go
to the Thai counter and check
iny ticket in. When I arrived at
the counter I told the Chinese
girl I wanted to check in on my
flight. It was cancelled. The
girl said there is no flight. It
•was cancelled yesterday. I real
ly became nauseous, spending
all that time waiting for a can
celled flight. Pan American
counter was closed so there was
no one there for me to com
plain to, as it was basically their
attendant’s fault for not con
firming the flight. I had the air-

Sunday, it was difficult to get
anything done even in Singa
