Atlanta B’nai B’riih
Seeking Historical
Material for Archives
B’nai B’rith in Atlanta will
join in observance of the fra
ternal order’s 120th anniver
sary this fall and leaders are
seeking old documents, photo
graphs and memorabelia about
the early days in this area.
Mrs. Ida Macher, executive
director for Gate City Lodge,
has been spending several
hours this past week research
ing copies of The Southern Is
raelite.
She had difficulty keeping
her eye on B’nai B’rith mater
ial only as she leafed through
the bound copies of news
papers and magazines for
nearly forty years.
“The files are a treasure of
human interest and historical
material about Atlanta and
Southern Jewry,” she said.
She was intrigued as well
by articles and material on
subjects of national and in
ternational interest.
Individuals and fami lies
having B’nai B’rith historical
material they can turn over to
Gate City Lodge for its arch
ival scrap book or research
can contact Mrs. Macher at
873-2807.
Gate City Lodge will mark
its 94th year this fall, she
pointed out.

The Havdalah service which Chaplain (CapL)
David M. Blumenfeld is chanting at Memorial
Chapel, Fort Eustis, Va., goes direct by intercom
to the bedside of Capt. Bennett Gordon, a patient
at MacDonald Army Hospital on the post. Special
ist Arthur Sollish holds Havdalah candle. In a
report to the National Jewish Welfare Board,
which recruits and serves Jewish chaplains in
all branches of the military, Chaplain Blumen
feld stated, “The decision to link the Chapel,
where main worship services are held, with the
hospital via an intercom system was made by
chaplains of the three faiths, who know that re
ligion is a great morale factor to patients. Inter
ested patients are supplied with prayer books so
that they may join in the services; they may
listen to any of the services by switching on the
hospital broadcasting system. Patients thus feel
very much a part of the community. They do not
feel cut off . . . they know we are thinking of
them, especially when, during the announcement
part of the service, we wish them well.”
