Comment and Opinion
„ ODD BULL
3'. A man from a cool country is occupying one
of the hottest seats in international peace-making.
He is Lieut. Gen. Odd Bull of Norway, comman
der of the UN Peace Supervision Organization in
the Middle East. Israel and Syria are embroiled
in the UN Security Council over the ambush mur
der of the two Israelis. Israel and Jordan are at
odds over a particularly fierce gun battle that
raged in this divided city . . . Since absolute peace
ptiU is well over the horizon if it is there at all,
General Bull and his associates from 12 nations
find themselves in the role of the bomb-disposal
squad, whose job it is to defuse a time bomb be
fore it goes off. The 56-year-old chief of the Royal
Norwegian Air Force would seem to have the
ideal disposition and background for such a frus
trating and at times exhausting task . . . Since he
came here in June, he has won the respect of the
Israelis as a man who is trying to be as objective
as possible under conditions that amount to be
ing "damned if you do, damned if you don’t” The
general is described as a man who listens care
fully and shows great common sense ... He be
lieves that there is “something called the truth”
and that this truth, advanced in good conscience
by a neutral third party, should be recognized as
such by both sides in a dispute. The UN Truce
Supervision Organization is situated in no man’s
land known since Biblical times as the Hill of Evil
Counsel. The general lives there in a modest apart
ment in the headquarters building . . . His wife,
Inge-Lise, is a fashion writer. She and their 8-
year-old son will soon be joining him in Jeru
salem.

j * ' OMINOUS WARNING
With attention focused on what is happening
in Southeast Asia and Latin America, the far
greater military danger in the Middle East has
gone almost unoticed . . . Unless Israel should be
supported by Western powers, the nation might
not survive a coordinated attack by Arab nations,
directed behind scenes by Russia ... No doubt
the United States, Britain and France would in
tervene in behalf of Israel . . . The Western powers
have been pulling their bases away from the Mid
dle East while the Russians have been placing
bases close to the area as well as supplying arms
to the Arab forces. Former Nazis are reported
active in the UAR, which brings them into work
ing partnership with the Communists, such as ex
isted in the time of the Ribbentrop-Molotov pact,
which sparked World War II . . .

Gnats, flies and fleas are the curse of the
earth.
Because the tribe of Levi kept its houses
clean and sanitary, it was not troubled with
flies, gnats, fleas or vermin, all of which
are dangerous and spread disease.
Every house should have a bathroom and
toilet as well as a dining room.
Spices were used to freshen the air in a
bathroom.
The hands should always be washed be
fore leaving the toilet.
One who wants to avoid intestinal dis
orders should not delay attending to the call
of nature.
Regularity in elimination is attainable by
attending to the call of nature every morn
ing and evening.
Proper environment has its effect on the
sick. Rabbi Akiba while visiting one of his
disciples who was ill, swept and sprinkled the
house, after which the student recovered.
Because of unsanitary conditions, all sick
ness comes from the arr. If not for the un
healthful air, even those killed could be re
stored to life.
The great Maimonides, codefier, philoso
pher, astronomer-mathematician, medical-
scientist and physician to Saladin sultan of
Egypt, declares in his Yad Ha Chazakah that
coins should not be placed in the mouth be
cause they may have been touched by per
sons suffering from contagious diseases.
There is a Talmudic maxim (Vol. Sanhe-
derin 58a) that “The earthly kingdom is simi
lar to the kingdom of Heaven.” Just like our
governments and cities administrations have
sanitation divisions so there is a celestial
sanitation department: the wind and the
rains are the sweepers and sprinklers march
ing befgt,$ the Lord and continually keep our
jjMgid in good and clean shape.
" The Tdiefta Sabbath xvi, 3 relates that
“UNITY” OR “CONFORMITY”
There is an erroneous interpretation of
the word “unity.” Critical comments —
thoughtlessly, perhaps, or expressive of di
vergent view points—confuse it with uniform
ity .. . with a spineless surrender of firmly-
held convictions. In a democratic society,
unity is a desirable standard of behavior.
Nothing can add more richly to the well
being of a people—on whatever level—than
such togetherness in a purposeful effort to
realize its common objectives. We miss this
unity in contemporary American life. In
marked degree—as though man were physi
cally too weak and spiritually disciplined to
master the evil qualities that corrode his
finer impulses—selfishness and pride, quest
for power and class-consciousness, keep im
pregnable the artificial barriers that have
plagued men and nations in all the years
of the past. Talk of “brotherhood” is mere
babble; national integrity, only shallow pre
tense . . . human dignity almost lost in the
seemingly endless struggle for a mythical
security. In politics and religion, in business
and in all the professions to which men de
vote their talents, the ‘survival of the fittest’
holds the poorly-privileged in chains. And
bigotry filters into the bloodstream of a
self-occupied nation’s life. In a sense, then,
there must also be ‘conformity’ . . . the
obedience to moral law, to ethical principles;
to a religious creed which brings men —
though differing in their methods of ap
proach—to their God-appointed role.

EXILE AND REDEMPTION
"Hark! one calleth: ‘Clear ye in the Wilder
ness the way of the Lord” (Isaiah 40, 3). On Sab
bath Nachamu, time suddenly seems to stand still.
A “Wellsian” atmosphere is created. Possibly it
is only the spiritually sensitive who are aware of
it; but for them it is an overpowering experience.
The words of comfort spoken by the prophet of
our Haftara were uttered some twenty-five cen
turies ago; that process of geula that he describes
in matchless language belongs to a long-forgotten
world. And yet the scene is inescapably contem
porary. Historic details undoubtedly differ; but
mutatis mutandis it is our own story. The epic of
modem Zionism and the saga of the Babylonian
exodus are essentially woven of the same strands:
gola and geula, exile and redemption. Funda
mentally the tragedy is the same; basically the
return assumes the same pattern then as now . . .
Yet if it is true that the Bible is our mandate and
the ultimate justification of our claim to Israel,
then Judaism is the sole vindication of our na
tional survival and revival. Genla means continui
ty—not only continuity of land-tenure but of life,
of the Jewish ethos, of our relgious culture, of
our dynamic civilization. Jewish tradition is not
the artificial creation of a handful of rabbis por
ing over yellowing tomes of obsolete learning.
Our tradition is the spiritual stream issuing from
the soul of the nation in its totality, as it evolved
through all the generations of its four millenia of
history, inspired by the prophets, instructed by
its sages, ennobled by its suffering and achieve
ments So does the Haftara foretell not only the
deliverance of Israel but the recognition of God’s
universal soverenignty by all mankind. It pro
claims Israel’s religious mission to testify at all
times to God’s eternal purposes before all the na
tion of the world. “Hark! one calleth”— the call
reverberates across the ages. There is but one
road—“the way of the Lord.” There is but one
goal: “the glory of the Lord shall be revealed.”
