THE SOUTHERN ISRAELITE
—and under Titus’ Arch.
There was a pause. Tenseness
pervaded the scene. In my heart
I said. Well, Hitler had elimi
nated the Jews from this youth’s
fatherland and therefore there
was hardly anyone left for him
to meet. He had to go to Rome
to meet a Jew.”
I broke the silence with anoth
er query.
“Did you see the picture ‘Ann
Frank’?
Still silent, he retreated a few
steps and then broke it with a
somewhat weak and hesitant
“yes."
“Well?"—I waited for some re
action.
“It was terrible, terrible,” he

said. “Hard to believe. Could
those things really have happen
ed?” he questioned somewhat be-
wilderingly.
He had seen “Arm Frank” but
never before met a live Jew. The
Jews had been murdered by his
race. The children likewise, hence
he had missed finding out even
what a Jewish schoolmate might
have been like.
And now he was confronted
with the first Jew, under the
Arch of Titus, and one who was
on his way to a reborn Israel In
the ancient land of Abraham,
Isaac and Jacob; a proud mili
tant Jew whose brown eyes
pierced strongly and even chal-
lengingly the sky-blue eyes of
the blond German who had
never dreamt that in his artistic
pursuits In Rome he would find
himself taking a “lesson” in He
braic history and Jewish dig
nity.
We continued in a more friend
ly spirit to discuss the geneology
of peoples and races and I re
minded him that all Europeans,
even the so-called Nordics, had
their origins in Asia but that,
through migrations and climatic
conditions, they changed in phys
iognomy and adopted new lang
uages,
“The Jews happen to be one
of the few peoples on earth to
have retained their ancient iden
tity and persisted despite perse
cutions,” I told him.
“True, they have outlived all
peoples and kept their true iden
tity,” the German youth agreed.
“Perhaps that is why they have
been persecuted,” he added. “The
other peoples were simply jealous
of Jewish uniqueness, genius and
greatness.”
The blond, handsome German
—who was only seven years old
when Hitler’s butchery was put
to an end In 1945—and the first
Jew he had ever met, the writer,
parted with a firm handshake.
The rendezvous under Titus’
Arch had come to an end.
What astonished this writer
and what appeared the most dis
turbing thing about this rendez
vous was the fact that this Ger
man post-Hitler youth had
known practically nothing about
the true facts of the Hitlerian
holocaust. Graver still was the
fact that he had very little know
ledge about the Jewish people
and their history.
Now, if this happened to be
the case with Uwe Janssen, the
same situation must obtain also
with most of the other youths in
present-day Germany.
And we may ask: What is the
German Government today doing
about this. Are the German
teachers explaining the true facts
to the children? Have the German
textbooks been revised so that
coming generations might know
the truth?
These are questions that must
be asked in Bonn now and not
tomorrow when it may be too
late.
