finding themselves under more
stable democratic governments —
will realize that it is to their best
interest to live at peace with their
neighbor Israel in an area—if but
given the chance—that could be
come a second America with an
enviable standard of living.
While in Istanbul, the writer
discovered that the numerous
tourists who visit Israel make
Turkey a must on their itinerary.
Istanbul is only a two-hour jet
flight from Tel Aviv. Recognizing
the importance of the Turkish-
Israel link for tourists, the Israel
Tourist Agents Association and
the “Tourist" Travel Company of
Turkey recently published a joint
travel brochure entitled “For Sun
and Fun Visit Turkey and Israel”
which “Have Everything You De
sire for your Holiday,” and “which
are tied together by the path of
History."
The Jewish community in Tur
key is a prosperous one. Out of
the 40,000 Jews-—the majority of
whom Sephardim—some 36,000
reside in Istanbul. The communi
ty maintains five schools: four
elementary and one secondary.
There is also a Rabbinical Semin
ary. In addition, synagogues can
be found in all Jewish settlements
throughout the country. Highly
esteemed by both the Jews and
the Turks is Turkey’s chief Rab
bi David Aseo.
The Turkish people take pride
in the fact that, during the Span
ish Inquisition, the then Sultan
had opened the doors to several
hundred thousand Jews who
found a welcome haven in Tur
key. Many of them subsequently
rose to high positions in both
Government and industry.
Today the Jews have become
so greatly integrated into the
life-stream of the nation that one
finds it difficult to distinguish
them from the Turkish people.
The Turks have indeed set an
example of how Moslems and
Jews can live together as true
brothers.
This close affinity marking
Turkish national life is not to be
found in any of the so-called
“Christian” nations of the world
where the evangelical teachings
have ever marked and singled
out the Jews as “one who does
not belong.” In Turkey the Jews
find themselves fully at home.
Here they are made to feel that
they belong.
Iran, the former Persia of Cy
rus fame, is perhaps the only
other Moslem state where such
an affinity exists. And had it not
been for the Mufti of Jerusalem
and some of the other Arab poli
ticians of his ilk, it goes without
saying that the Arabs and Jews
would today also be living in a
peaceful and prosperious Middle
Eastern region—side by side as
true brethren and as common
children of Abraham.
This writer salutes Turkey—
Israel’s loyal friend in the Middle
East.
