Thus one can speak, if only in a limited sense of such an entity as American Jewry, and even more so, of an Israeli Jewry. In both cases there is a common environment, a pres ent sharing of conditions and circumstances by the entire popu lation, which influences the think ing and feeling of that population, no matter how diffierent the past history of its various components. From this bird’s-eye viewpoint of the immediate and present geographic, economic and cultural milieu which serve to unite all Israelis and all American Jews internally, while keeping the two Jewries apart, it may be said that most Israelis regard American Jewry as the “rich uncle” who provides much of the funds neces sary to bring in immigrants and to build up the country. The atti tude towards this “rich uncle” is usually ambivalent. At times Is raelis praise him for his lavish contribution, and take pride in the power and prestige of Ameri can Jewry, while at other times they criticize him for what they regard as his vulgar display of affluence when he comes here as a tourist, for the conformist and assimilatory tendencies in Ameri can Jewish life, for the estrange ment of American Jewish student youth from Israel and so forth. But the American Jewish tour ist on his side also displays an ambivalent attitude toward Is rael. He sees the energy, the en thusiasm, oftimes the idealism, with which the country is being built and developed, and likes it. Besides the personal complaints of tourists there is also a more gen eral complaint which has to do with the whole social structure of Israel. Israeli members of the in telligentsia are apt to regard up start middle-class vulgarity as the besetting sin of American Jewry, (“Did they have to spend five million dollars on a Reform Temple near Chicago, just because the architect of that Temple got publicity in Time magazine?”) I was recently asked. The more in telligent American Jews who come here see Israel’s besetting sin as greed for political power. They see nine parties represented in the Knesset, the Parilament, of this tiny country, they see the power politics engaged in by Orthodox politicians, rabbinical and lay, they hear of the politi cal party division in the Hista- drut, divisions Which parallel the Government parties, and they even read of rival sport organiza- t i o n s established by various parties. Lately they even heard of a big political graft scandal in volving a religious party.
