In care fully reading the quotations above, taken from his Proclamations and Speeches, it is not difficult to vis ualize the aristocrat, the scholar, the statesman, the brilliant orator, whom we know as John Adams, as the same personality who uttered the above sentiments, which are essentially and inherently Hebraic and Judaic in thought and compo sition. The depth of the Hebraic influ ence on President Adams leads to the conclusion that his knowledge about Jews and Judaism was more than superficial as one would real ize when reading the President’s letter, which was sent from Quincy, Mass., on February 16th, 1809, to F. A. Vanderkamp, in which he says: “The two most powerful, active and enterprising nations that ever existed are now contending with us. The two nations, to whom mankind are under more obliga tions for the progress of science and civilization than to any other except the Hebrews. This consid eration affects me more than the danger from either or both. 1 ex cepted the Hebrews for in spite of Bolingbroke and Voltaire, I will insist that the Hebrews have done more to civilize men than any other nation. If I were an atheist, and believed in blind eternal fate, I should still believe that fate had ordained the Jews to be the most essential instrument for civilizing nations. If I were an atheist of the other sect, who believe or pre tend to believe, that all Is ordained by chance, I should still believe that chance had ordered the Jews to preserve and propagate to all mankind the doctrine of a supreme intelligent, wise, almighty Sov ereign of the universe, which I be lieve to be the great essential principle of all morality and con sequently of all civilization.” He expresses himself similarly in a letter addressed to Mordecai M. Noah which is to be found in the latter’s book entitled, “Travels in England, France, Spain and the Barbary Lands.” BEST WISHES for the Holiday Season Carla G ay [)ress Co FACTORY ISO Garnett St.. S.
