uniform to serve as a soldier in
the Jewish Legion.
Dov Joseph was nineteen then.
He was a Canadian, born in Mon
treal and he was the only mem
ber of the Canadian Jewish Le
gionnaires who after fighting for
the future of the Jewish Home
land decided to stay there and
cast his lot with it.
Besides his present post of
Minister of Justice he has served
in various other key cabinet pos
itions, as Israel’s first Minister of
Development, Minister of Com
merce, Minister of Transportation
and Minister of Supply and Ra
tioning.
The flavor of the man is de
monstrated by an anecdote at the
time: his was the unpopular task
of enforcing rationing. In view of
the stringency, Mr. Joseph’s own
wife was hard put to find some
thing to feed the family which
was not on the rationed list. One
day she found such food which
she thought her husband would
like. The next morning he had it
for breakfast.
“Um, this tastes good, what is
it?” asked Mr. Joseph.
“Yoguart,” said his wife.
“Remind me then to put it at
once on the ration list,” said her
husband.
A lawyer by profession, he is
also a Ph.D. and the author of a
number of books. He was one of
the organizers of the Jewish re
sistance in the second World War.
One of his most interesting en
counters was with General Bark
er, the British commandant in
Palestine at the time of the out
break of the war. Dov Joseph was
on a delegation which went to
offer Jewish assistance to the
British.
General Barker however was
politely contemptuous. Showing
Joseph a map, the General said:
“Look, there is Syria our ally,
France has that under its con
trol and here are Lebanon, Iraq
and Egypt. You will admit we
British are pretty strongly en
trenched in those lands. I don’t
believe the Jewish Agency has
any navy and we would hardly
need any of your assistance.”
It is history now of course that
within a few months Vichy
France was in control of Syria.
A revolutionary movement had
arisen in Iraq supporting the
Nazis, and the Egyptians behind
the British backs were confiding
the British secrets to the Nazis.
The British then were glad to ob
tain Jewish assistance and it
proved telling, according to Dr.
Joseph, in the successful stoppage
of Rommel at El Alamen, where
the Nazi guns received their first
powerful setback.
Dr. Joseph is best known for
his services as Military Governor
of Jerusalem during the siege of
that city in the Israeli war for
independence. Dr. Joseph has told

the story of the battle in his book
“The Faithful City.” There is also
a bit of personal biography in it.
He mentions casually in a sen
tence his mother’s singing to
him in his infancy a Jewish song
with the refrain "You, my little
child, will open the gates of Jer
usalem ” This writer does not of
course know how much of a
singer his mother was, but she
most certainly was a prophetess.
Perhaps his mothers’ song ex
plains the career of Dov Joseph,
explains why the author of “The
Faithful City” has always been
also “The Faithful Jew ”
Today, Dr. Joseph points out,
America has reduced her aid to
Israel at a time when German
payments are about to stop, (sup
port for Israel Bonds therefore
becomes imperative if the gates
of Jerusalem are to remain open
to those who knock at her por-

if you are of the tribe that
loves the art of the violinist, keep
an eye on the musical horizon
for a young man who seems des
tined to follow in the footsteps
of the long line of Jewish wun-
derkinder who transcended the
mere virtuoso scale in their
reaching out for artistic pinnacle.
His name is Pinchas Zucker-
man, a fifteen-year-old Israeli
about whom much will be heard
in the future if he is not rush
ed too rapidly. Pablo Casals, on
hearing the youngster in Israel
two years ago, called him an un
usually gifted violinist—an opin
ion shared by some of the great
est musicians who heard him per-
torm. A New York Times music
critic who heard Zuckerman per
form in New York City at the
13th annual concert for the ben
efit of the United Nations Chil
dren’s Fund called him a phen
omenal young violinist “capable
of projecting with incredible force
the most vivid emotional qual
ities.”
The young artist has been
studying for the last two years in
the United States under a schol
arship provided by the Amerlca-
israel Cultural Foundation When
the young man received the schol
arship, it was understood he
would give no public perform

over This stipulation is a meas
ure of the impeccable responsi
bility of the organization in the
handling of its scholarship stu
dents.
