award will be presented to Mrs.
Bernard Facher for outstanding
! service to the B’nai B’rith Wom-

The presentation will be made

A special guest and speaker
| will be Mrs. Maurice Goldberg
| of Washington, director of District
j| 5 B’nai B’rith Women,
t A dramatization “How Dong,
i Oh God?,” written by Mrs. Jacob
r Rothchild, will be presented. The
cast will feature Mrs. Marshall
Mantler, Beryl Goldberg, director
of Theater Atlanta, and members
of Theater Atlanta.

She has been a regular driver
of the cerebral palsied children,
an important project of B’nai
B’rith Women, for over ten years
This past year, Helene did an
outstanding job as the Atlanta
Chairman for the District 5 Con
vention held in Atlanta. Helene
is presently serving as Secretary
of the Metropolitan B’nai B’rith
Women.
In addition to her B’nai B’rith
work, Helene has worked in the
Atlanta Jewish community in
many other activities and organ
izations. She was one of the co
founders of the Golda Meir Chap
ter of Pioneer Women in 1946,
serving on its board for many
years, and actively participating
in itss program. She has also
served on the boards of Hadassah,
Brandeis, and the Bureau of Jew
ish Education.
Helene was formerly Chairman
of the Youth Activities Commit
tee of the Atlanta Jewish Com
munity Center and is. at present,
a member of the A.J.C.C. Board
of Directors. She was co-chair
man of the Special Gifts Division
of the Atlanta Jewish Welfare
Fund and has served as a mem
ber of the Community Relations
Committee.
Helene was also engaged in the
Scouting Program, serving as a
Brownie Leader for several years,
nor did she neglect her P.T.A
responsibilities, according chair
manships in various positions
during her daughter’s elementary
school years. It was in Helene’s
den that the excellent B’nai B’rith
Girls Chapter, J.O.J. was formed,
and her support for this Chapter
was both enthusiastic and valua
ble for many years. Helene’s
daughter, Robyn, a senior at the
University of Georgia, majoring
in elementary education, was ac
tive in the B’nai B’rith Youth
Program, The Temple Youth
Group, and has served in coun
sellor positions at the A.J.C.C.
Camp Programs.
Bernard Facher, Helene’s hus
band, is head of Fasher Painting
and Decorating Company, is a
past President of the Atlanta
Painting and Decorating Associa
tion and now serves on the Na
tional Board, Although Helene
has been an important member
of her husband’s firm, serving as
secretary and bookkeeper, she
has not allowed this responsibil
ity to halt her activities in the
many organizations that have
called upon her during the years.

Elka Sylvern to Share Program
With Youngman December 15
Elka Sylvern, R.C.A. recording
star, will share the program with
Henny Youngman at the Han-
ukah Festival for Israel Sunday,
Dec. 15, at the AJCC in behalf
of Israel Bonds, it was announced
by A, J Weinberg, general
chairman.
Miss Sylvern, who has appear
ed on most major TV programs,
is most famous for her appear
ance in the Broadway produc
tion of “Lil Abner
Her major recordings for RCA
have been with the “Wayfarers,”
two of them exceeding the '4 mil
lion sales.
She has appeared in concerts at
Carnegie Hall, Habimah Theatre,
Centre Culturel American -

Joel Goldberg Scholarships
ANNUAL JOEL HIRSCH GOLDBERG SCHOLARSHIPS being
awarded this fall to two University of Georgia students—Jane Gar
vey of Warner Robbins, senior majoring in languages, and Elmer
Nash, Lilburn, Ga., a sophomore law student.
These awards, made annually since 1954, are presented in
memory of the late Georgia Alumnus and Air Force lienutenant
who was killed in a. plane crash. Joel Hirsch Goldberg, the son
of the founder president of B’nai B’rith Women in Atlanta. Mak
ing the presentation above is Mrs. Howard Aromn, president of
the Atlanta Council of B’nai B’rith Women.
So far scholarships have been given to 17 students, all of whom
went on to graduate with honors and Phi Beta Kappa member
ships.
Ed Kuhn Will Relute 94- Yenr History

Edward M. Kahn, outstanding
Atlanta Jewish historian, will
give a dramatic illustrated talk
at the Gate City Lodge Wnai
B’rith 94th Champagne Birthday
Party Sunday night, Dec. 8, at
the Progressive Club.
Mr Kahn will trace personal -
lilies and events of Atlanta B’nai
B’rith from 1869 to 1963. He will
use an opaque projector to flash
photographs and clippings from
the past onto a movie screen.
During the last few weeks, he has
been pouring over old scrapbooks
and records to compile a history
of Gate City's 94 years, which he
will narrate at the meeting.
He has been in Atlanta since
1928, and during these 36 years,
Mr. Kahn has been deeply in
volved in the life of B’nai B’rith
and the Jewish community. He
is a past president of Gate City
Ixxlge.
Mr. Kahn has been executive
director of the Jewish Social
Service Federation since 1928 He
was executive of the Jewish Ed
ucational Alliance, later changed
to the Jewish Community Center
executive director of the Ben
Massel Dental Clinic (.success, u
to the Morris Hirsch Clinic!:
executive director of the Atlanta
Jewish Community Council since
1945.
In 1956, he received a leader
ship Award from the Atlanta
Chamber of Commerce for his
work as president of the Nation
al Conference of Jewish Com
munal Service, a national associ
ation of Jewish organizations
throughout the country.
The Atlanta Post, Jewish War
Veterans named him Citizen of
the Year in 1958.
He is a charter member of the
National Association of Social
Workers and a member of the Na
tional Association of Center
Workers.
Since 1932, Mr. Kahn has been
a faculty member of the Atlanta
University School of Social Work

ert and David, and a daughter.

“Man of Year” Nominations
The Distinguished Service Award for the year 1963 will be
presented at a meeting early in 1964, according to Irwin Green-
baum, chairman of the committee in charge.
Mr Greenbaum states that the selection will be made i» De*
cember by the committee, which is composed of all the officers of
Gate City Lodge B’nai B’rith. In accordance with the rules govern
ing the selection, the Committee is inviting letters of recommenda
tion from all members of the community as to their choice for the
award. Anyone desiring to make a recommendation is urged to
mail in the attached ballot to Mr. Greenbaum. Separate letters may
be written setting forth the reasons for the individual’s choice.
The formula for the selection is as follows: “Gate City Lodge
should choose each year a citizen of Greater Atlanta who, on be
half of the City of Atlanta, in the judgment of the Distinguished
Service Award Committee, best exemplifies the spirit and precepts
of B’nai B’rith—Benevolence, Brotherly Love and Harmony—by
reason of his accomplishments and unceasing and devoted efforts
for the advancement of Jewish communal life.”
