THI IODIBI1N ISRAELITE
OFF THE RECORD — by Nathan Ziprin
Key to Bible
How well do you know your
Bible?
I have known people in my
yeahiva days with an encycloped
ic knowledge of the holy tome,
men who could trust their mem
ories as much as their libraries
when it came to conjuring up bib
lical tale, geography, prophecy,
geneaology and the whole gamut
of events that is encompassed in
Biblical and post-biblical script
Unfortunately I am not one of
them. I have read the Bible a
number of times in my days, yet
I must confess that I have no
visual conception of the unfold
ing story, of the sequence of the
events and of the significant
details that cement tale into his

That said
dai-y, I must go to the source—
a most delightful but often diffi
cult chore since time is often the
essence of the search for fact, for
a line of royal succession or even
for an aphorism, a word of wis
dom or revelation.
There is no substitute for the
Bible. But there has long been a
need for a good key to the Bible,
a work fingering its pages for us
when we can’t find them That
need has now been excellently
filled with the publication of
“The Graphic History of the
Jewish Heritage,” edited by
Pinchas Wollman-Tsamir and
published apparently with great
dedication by Shengold Publish
ers.
The publishers call the book an
illustrated companion to the Old
Testament, designed to give lay
man, as well as students and
scholars, a greater and more
comprehensive understanding of
the Bible The claim is a mod
erate one.
Actually the 215-page volume
is replete with organized infor
mation that challenges the im
agination. Its structure is unique
both in conception and in execu
tion. It took the author about
twenty-five years to gather the
data, draw the charts, prepare
tables and to organize the sum
maries, and the end-result is not
only a revelation in scholarship
hut an invaluable contribution to
the layman’s organized grasp of
the Bible. Essentially the volume
limns the chronology of the Bible
in visual and graphic terms. In
essence however it is a powerful
stimulant to turning to the orig
inal source.
It would take more space than
is alloted here to illustrate the
uniqueness of the volume. Here
are some examples, chosen ha
phazardly. On page 211 of the
book we find a chart under the
title "Prayers In the Bible,” giving
the names of the Biblical figures
who uttered them, what they
prayed for, their outcome and the
source where they can be found
A chart under the title "The
Priesthood” lists the priests in
chronological order from Aaron
until the destruction of the first
temple. Elsewhere is a genealog
ical table covering the twenty-
six generations from Adam to
Moses, and if you wish to know
who were the seven prophetesses
just turn to page 156 and for the
prophets to page 158 The ladies
indeed come first.
To have on one page a pano
ramic picture of a whole sequ
ence of Biblical events is a re
warding experience.
The volume is an illuminating
work, for it gives light with one
stroke to memorable events in
our early history that may have
darkened in our memories be
cause of our sins, the sin of not
reading the Bible
FOOTNOTE TO HISTORY
How would Israel look today
if the wise men at the 1913 World
Zionist Congress in Vienna had
not decided to endorse the prin
ciple of the need of establishing
a Hebrew University? The pro
posal at the time encountered a
good deal of opposition. They
argued that “Jews had enough in
tellectuals” and that what was
needed were farmers, craftsmen,
artisans, laborers and workers of
all kinds. However, Weizrnann
and his followers had their way.
Their thesis was that a univer
sity in Jerusalem would become
the spiritual focus of the Jewish
people — and history has vindi
cated their judgment. Building of
the Hebrew University was not to
begin until years later, and now
it stands as a tribute to a vision
that saw a dream blooming into
a reality and a challenge.

Rabbi Gives Sermon
At Service for Kennedy
WASHINGTON (JTA)— Rabbi
Stanley Rabinowitz of Adas Is
rael Congregation delivered the
sermon last week at an interde
nominational service for the late
President Kennedy at a Methodist
Church here which was attended
by President Johnson.
He was one of two rabbis
among the six clergymen parti
cipating in the service. The other
was Rabbi Norman Gerstenfeld of
the Washington Hebrew Congre
gation. Also represented were the
National City Christian Church,
the Universalist Methodist Church
and the Calvary Baptist Church.
Rabbi Rabinowitz said in his ser
mon that President Johnson had
translated the assasination of
President Kennedy into a national
summons for the rejection of
hatred and violence. “President
Johnson perceptively grasped that
ancient truth in his address to a
joint session of Congress Thursday
when he stated that out of dis
aster we shall gain greatness and
strength,” the rabbi said.
NEW YORK (JTA) — The
American Committee for the
Weizrnann Institute of Science
this week decided to establish a
permanent memorial to the late
President John F. Kennedy at
the Institute in Rehovot. The de
cision, which was adopted unan
imously at a meeting here of the
officers of the Committee, called
for a memorial “symbolizing and
expressing President Kennedy’s
profound interest in scientific and
technological research for peace
ful purposes.”
Abraham Feinberg, president of
the Committee, announced that
the organization’s dinner, which
was to have been held on De
cember 5, has been cancelled in
deference to the 30-day period
of mourning for the late Pres
cient. Mr. Kennedy was to have
been the only speaker at this
function.
