THE SOUTHER N I <■> K A K I. I T E
BEHIND UN SCENES by David Horowitz
Johnson’s Pro-Israel Record
UNITED NATIONS, (WUP)—
If the Arab leaden here enter
tain any hope that President
Lyndon B. Johnson will in any
way support them in their battle
against Israel—just because he
is a Southerner and because in
some UN minds he has often
been classified as a “Conserva
tive”—they have a big surprise
in store for them.
President Johnson's record
speaks for itself.
On February 5, 1961, address
ing a B’nai Zion function here in
New York, the then Vice Presi
dent declared: “Modern Israel is
aware of the challenge of the
pursuits of peace. It is a part of
that Middle East of which Presi
dent Kennedy spoke last year.
He said ‘it needs water — not
war, tractors — not tanks, bread
— not bombs.'
“Israel understands that de
velopment,” Johnson continued,
“depends upon the basic resource
of human talent, and its institu
tions of learning are invigorated
by eager students now coming
from many lands. It understands
that practical problems often
yield to advancing knowledge.”
During the hectic UN debates
following the Sinai operation in
1956, when there was talk about
imposing sanctions on Israel be
cause of her refusal to evacuate
Sinai without first receiving
some agreed assurances from
Egypt that it will stop all sabo
tage and refrain from belligerent
acts against the Jewish State,
President Johnson — then the
Majority Leader in the Senate —
spoke up forcefully.
In a letter to the late John
Foster Dulles, he told the then
Secretary of State in blunt lang
uage that he thought it “unwise
to impose sanctions on Israel. I
have never heard," Johnson
chided Dulles, “that sanctions
would be imposed on Egypt for
its provocations against Israel
and for its refusal to refrain
from violence.” This statement
of his came as a blow to both
Dulles and the State Depart
ment.
When the Senate, on May 3,
1960, took up an amendment
calling for a halt in the aid to

the battle for its passage
Lyndon B Johnson’s entire
record proves him a staunch
friend of Israel.
In a communication addressed
to the author of “The Mission of
Israel,” Jacob Baal-Teshuva, on
April 1, 1961, Johnson stated:
“Israel is a nation which has
excited the admiration of the
world by its ability to stand up
against great odds and face all
problems with courage and re
sourcefulness. As a nation,” he
added, “it has literally lifted it
self by its bootstraps. All of us
who are friends of freedom hope
that Israel will continue to
flourish as a democracy and as a
progressive, forward-looking na
tion.”
Two days after he was sworn
in as the 36th President of the
United States, Lyndon Johnson
sent the following reassuring
note to Prime Minister Levi Esh-
kel:
"Friendship for Israel was in
the tradition of close bonds
which link out two countries. I
intend to carry out that tradition
to the best of my ability.”
In office but a short time.
Johnson has already won the ac
claim and confidence of world
leaders by the personal qualities
he has manifested, by his utter
