He was that kind of a man
Lyndon B. Johnson is neces
sarily and to a considerable
degree an unknown question on
many of the issues and positions
which in totality constitute the
personality of a President. This
is true not only because of the
lesser roles he has held in public
life than his slain prdecessor but
also because as much as a man
molds the Presidency, even more
does the Presidency mold the
holder of that great office.
Yet the record indicates that
President Johnson is acutely
aware of the interests and prob
lems of American Jews, particu
larly in their devotion to Israel’s
welfare. In the fantastic pressures
of the first days of his Presidency,
he went out of the way to assure
Israel of his determination to
continue America’s friendly re
lations.
As Senate Majority Leader in
1947, in the aftermath of the
Suez campaign, Mr. Johnson made
a trip to the White House to stern
ly warn the then President Eisen
hower, the late Secretary of State
Dulles and then United Nations
Ambassador Lodge that the Sen
ate would reject economic sanc
tions against Israel. He deplored
the attempted “coercion” of Israel
as “a method of settlement.” And,
in a Senate speech, he rejected
any effort to pin the blame for
the Suez developments on Israel.
As Vice-President, though he
no longer had the fulcrum to ap
ply such power, he made clear
his continuous interest in Israel.
During his final year as a Sen
ator, Mr. Johnson learned of the
participation of some members of
the Rockwellite gang in the arm
ed forces and, as chairman of the
Senate Preparedness Investigat
ing Committee, he demanded an
immediate explanation from the
Defense Department. Within days,
the Department moved to have
the Marine Corps discharge a
Marine who had joined the Rock-
wellites.
Both Mr. and Mrs. Johnson are
known to have privately support
ed Israeli philanthropic needs and
Mr. Johnson, buying a $1,000 Is
rael Development Bond, was
understood to have told an Israel
Bond official that he had previ
ously purchased a number of Is
raeli bonds.
In the initial days of his Ad
ministration the new President
has acted with speed and firm
ness to offset the impresion cre
ated by the catastrophe in Dallas
that America was unfit to lead
the free world. As President, Mr.
Johnson will undergo a testing
which is perhaps without a par
allel in any elective office any
where in the free world. He has
shown in his public life qualities
of intelligence and generosity of
heart, as well as exceptional skills
as a mediator and organizer, au
guring well for his stewardship
in the staggering duties of the
Presidency to all Americans.
HLs first words struck deep
into the hearts of all Americans
envisioning new horizons for us
and the world.
