Johnson and U.S.
LONDON (JTA) — Nasser’s

“The people will not allow

NAZI MURDERER
ADMITS “THAT’S
WAY IT WAS”
FRANKFU KT, Germany
(WUP)— Karl Hocker, second
in command at the Auschwitz
concentration camp and on trial
here with 21 other Nazis for
complicity in the murder of
Jews, admitted in court that
only Jews were singled out for
the gas chambers.
“Then you knew that people
were being killed in the gas
chambers?” he was asked by
the judge. “Basically not,” he
replied—“except for the Jews.”
“But Jews are people,” the
judge retorted. "Yes,” Hocker
answered, “but the political
view of the Reich government
was that Jews were undesirable
en racial ground.”
“And should therefore be kill
ed?” the judge shot back.
“Yes, that’s the way it was,”
replied the Nazi murderer.

Mr Weinberg urged all persons

Special Programs
for Retarded Children
DETROIT (JTA)—Special pro
grams for retarded children are
now being offered here by the
Jewish Community Center and by
Temple Israel, according to a re
port by the Detroit Association
for Retarded Children.
The Jewish Family and Chil
dren’s Service has always pro
vided counseling services to par
ents of letarded children, to help
the families accept realities of the
problems facing them, to under
stand their own feelings, and to
work out placement plans where
indicated. Only limitations of
staff available prevents the agen
cy from reaching out further to
help this group of troubled par
ents and children.
The Jewish Community Center
now offers a weekly group serv
ices program for Jewish young
adults, with a separate group for
boys of the 15-25 range, and a like
program for girls of the same ago
range. A co-educational program
is also offered for Jewish adults
from 26-40 years of age. The
overall purpose of each of these
programs is to increase the mem
bers’ ability to function socially.
Weinberg stated, redeem your
bonds now and reinvest them.

THEY FLY
THROUGH THE AIR
Leaping from an unwarranted
assumption to a foregone conclu
sion has always been a favorite
indoor sport of John Birchers and
other extreme rightists. Take their
full-page ad in several news-,
papers this month. Stating their
belief that President Kennedy
(whom they hated) was murder
ed by a Communist, they attri
bute to former Congressman Mar
tin Dies the assertion that “when
a Communist commits murder he
is acting under orders.” This adds
up, they insist, to a full-fledged
Communist conspiracy making

Communism a “serious internal
menace in the United States.” The
facts are, as the press has report
ed, that Lee Harvey Oswald was
a confused extremist who felt
alienated from both America and
the Soviet Union—and that, as
the FBI has indicated, his was
most likely the act of a single
man rather than a group con-
spiracy.
The Birchers try to rope in
FBI head J. Edgar Hoover to back
up their line. But they carefully
avoid quoting Mr. Hoover’s speech
to the Brotherhood of the Wash
ington Hebrew Congregation on
December 4. "The cause of Com
munism is well served,” declared
Mr. Hoover, “by the hatemongers,
the lunatic fringe and other rebels
who preach a doctrine of malice
and intolerance toward their fel
low man.”
"These venomous fanatics,”
continued Mr. Hoover, “whether
they are extremists of the left
or right, are carriers of a high-
1\ infectious disease; they have
brought forth the bombs and
ignited the flames that have kill
ed decent Americans and even
innocent children; they are a na
tional disgrace. Communism can
not be defeated by hysteria and
name-calling, but it can be de
feated by education and living
proof that our way of life is
best."
